Pro-lifers don't like pro-life Britney statue

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 29th 2006 1:31PM

britney spearsSeriously, is no one ever happy? It seems like a man can't sculpt an image of Britney Spears on a bearskin rug squeezing out her first born son without everyone getting all worked up about it, even those you thought were on your side. You see, artist Daniel Edwards created "Monument To Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" as an homage to the young mother, citing her bravery in choosing to put her baby ahead of her career. The problem is, Edwards' fellow pro-lifers don't like the sculpture very much, given Britney's rather provocative pose, which is, I'm assuming, not the most comfortable position for giving birth, unless you happen to be a pack mule. But it's not just pro-life groups who are taking umbrage to Edwards' masterpiece; the animal rights group PETA isn't happy with the bearskin rug Brit is birthing upon, either. Okay, so his little art project didn't quite make the statement he intended, big deal. If nothing else, he should be honored that he actually got two groups who probably tend to lean opposite directions politically to agree on at least one thing. That's a grand achievement in itself.

So this statue managed to piss of pro-lifers and PETA at once? that's a major accomplishment that should be applauded. This statue rules.

most mothers who continue their rape pregnancies say that their children were the only good to come out of the rape experience. Remember, this child is half the mother's, as well as half the rapist's. Furthermore, many mothers who aborted children conceived in rape say that the abortions were akin to a second rape.

That's nice. If it were me, I'd be at Planned Parenthood before you could say "coat hanger." I don't want children to begin with. To be stuck with a child that was forced upon me by a rapist would be twice as bad. And more than a few women agree with me.

It's really not that big of a deal. If this is so bad then why don't they take off the birthing shows on Discovery Health? But that would be a bad position to give birth in... ouch. Peta should get a life. Like someone said earlier, the bear skin rug is made of stone, so who gives? Or is is a sin now for artists to harm a rock? But one thing does bother me... Everyone says it's britney, and from all the pix I've seen, the face doesn't even resemble her's.

I just don't get how it's supposed to be a "pro-life" statement involving Britney's "brave" choice. To give her a little credit here, Sean Preston was a planned and wanted pregnancy. Freakin' DUH. And what is brave about a rich, married, white woman with oodles of support from her family, husband and friends having a baby? That's beyond me...

First of all, Britney Spears had a c-section.

Secondly, to Andrew - South Dakota's new law allows abortion ONLY if the mother's life (not health) is in danger. There is no rape or incest exception. And most mothers who continue their rape pregnancies say that their children were the only good to come out of the rape experience. Remember, this child is half the mother's, as well as half the rapist's. Furthermore, many mothers who aborted children conceived in rape say that the abortions were akin to a second rape.

Finally, is PETA going to do anything about bluebird fanciers who, anxious to shore up dwindling bluebird populations, remove living (non-bluebird) fledglings from bluebird nesting boxes and drop them onto the ground?

"Monument to Pro-Life, the Birth of Sean Preston" by Daniel Edwards is purely self promotional, and not art. Art is something designed to provoke thought and emotions in people, good and bad. We can all agree that this sculpture evokes emotion and thought, but Mr. Edwards intention is that we have the same thought, "pro-life is good, pro-choice is bad", and emotion (caring for the baby Sean Preston and abhoring the idea of abortion). To me, this is not art. At the very most, it is very bad art.

Like all bad art, its purpose is too contrived. Also, he seemed to miss the message he was supposed to deliver...that pro-life is the way to be. When you look at Britney Spears having a baby you think, "Damn. That is nasty. To think we were one abortion away from having to view this horrible piece of garbage.

A side note: You know, its a funny thing. I am for pro-choice myself, even though I could never see myself happy with the decision of having an abortion if I had to make it. (Lucky for me I'm a man!) If I was a woman though, I would probably choose to have the baby. The exception would be if it was a product of rape or incest because the child would alway remind me of that incident. I'd be OK in South Dakota, because their law catered to my particular psychological issue.

The South Dakota law protects choice under the psychological circumstance of being impregnated with an incestous or rape baby because they recognize that the baby would function as a reminder of the rape or incest, and this reminder could lead to poor parenting.

But what if you just knew that you will be a horrible mother that will not care for their child, will abuse their child, and would end up sponging off of society in order to support their child? What law exists in South Dakota that protects your right to choose? I mean, if the law is designed to protect children from growing up in a poor environment, then what about a guarantee like a mother telling you, "I cannot care for this baby,"?

In Daniel Edwards defense I will say that the bear skin rug and the fact that Britney is on her knees is a nice touch.

yeah.. so.. this guy is not an obscure artist.. he has created several "controversial" pieces prior to this sculpture. while i completely abhor this work i will argue that it is valid. and.. i just have to say.. my wife during her very very long labor was positioned in this exact mannner.. well.. minus the bearskin rug. but yes. there you go tigers...and not to be too much of a jerk.. but calling something a "little art project".. is horribly condescending.... only fellow artists can belittle a work with such snobbery. ;)
