Here it is: the Lost map

by Anna Johns, posted Mar 30th 2006 2:17PM

After weeks of idling, Lost finally gave us a juicy nugget in last night's episode. It came in the form of a glow-in-the-dark map on the inside of a blast door. It appears to be a map of all the Dharma Initiative hatches on the island, and something in the middle signified with a giant, pink question mark. It looks as though all the hatches were meant to lead to that middle spot, but they weren't finished or were blocked off (as marked with X's). Maybe that's what the concrete is that Jack and Sayid found.

According to this guy, who evidently stayed up all night decoding the map, it has several phrases, such as "Sursum Corda", and "I Am Here" on the Swan hatch (where the characters are). There are several other phrases that I'm guessing are in Latin.

Here's another, deconstructed version of the map with a lot more text (somebody has Hi Def TV!).

What do you see?

Think back to one of the episodes where Michael, Sawyer, and Jin were out in the water after the raft was destroyed. I believe Sawyer was in the water bleeding. If you think real hard you may remember something fish or shark-like swimming around in the water at that time. As it swims past the camera you see a fin - WITH THE DHARMA SYMBOL ON IT! It's really fast but if you recorded the episode and can pause it, you will see what I mean. It is toward the end of the episode. - Thank You, Thank You very much!

Has anyone read the book "Chasm" by Stephen Laws? It seems to me that Lost has borrowed a lot of ideas from this book.

I noticed it said in the lower right "Activity minimal during lockdown and restocking procedures" seems to fit with the lockdown coinciding with Jack and Kate finding a pallet full of food and but why did no one seem to hear a plane?

A couple more observations from The Map: One annotation reads "System wide failure of Dharmatel intranet 4.08.00, 8.15.01, 01.06.05 - complete shutdown in effect". These dates have some relationship to the "hatch numbers" (4,8,15,16,23,42). Also, below "The Flame" hatch are three square roots: sqrt 16, sqrt 64 and sqrt 225, which are, of course, 4,8,15 - the first three of the "hatch numbers".

I'm not so sure that Lost is set in the present time. There have been suggestions it is in the near future, perhaps around 2012?

Liberate te ex inferis - Save yourself from hell

This was used in the movie "Event Horizon" in which an experimental quantum singularity drive plunged the ship into what is thought to be Hell. The rescue crew sent to find the ship discovers the captain saying this bit of latin in his Log (as he's holding his freshly plucked out eyes).

Despite all Locke's personal grief, shown on the recent flash backs, he has yet to become wheelchair bound. So there must be more Locke history to come.

The numerals on each (what we may assume) are different 'hatches' are significant.

For example, think about the modern alpha-numeric translation of CVIII, which appears near "the swan" where our friends are.

It looks like someone had been writing on that blast door for a while. Maybe something similar to what happened in One Of Them had ocurred and blocked passage to the computer. The current resident of the hatch would probably been unable to crawl through the vent to the coomputer and failed in pressing the button, which seemingly triggered the blacklights. Somehow he got hold of a pen that works under UV light and started scribbling away to pass the time. The earliest date, around October '84, then passes up to around 2003. I'm guessing that Kelvin was currently running the hatch. Some of the Latin signs seem to be written just as a reminder to stay happy, such as Sursum Corda, which means "Lift Up Your Hearts." Eventually, he found a way to make the blast doors come up, but by then it had been too late. All systems would have shut down already. No one was in the bunkers that were found. Although we do know that there still are The Others, possibly abandoned by the Dharma administrators, after the DeGroots and Hanso had realized that their life-long dreams had just gone up in smoke. But if this is all true, then one question remains: Why are they still pushing that darned button?!

Did anyone catch the flashback of Locke when he was inspecting a home, the women in the scene with him was the women Sayid is looking for.
