Smallville: Hypnotic

by Lacy Hall, posted Mar 31st 2006 12:16PM
It's been so long since we've had a new fresh episode of Smallville, that I was absolutely giddy last night at its return. All in all, I thought it was a pretty good episode, even with it's faulty plot points. Clark finds himself hypnotized by Simone, a blonde kinky-haired seductress who looks a lot better when she flat-irons her hair. She hypnotizes him by using a special blue stone that she wears around her neck. I had a little trouble believing that Clark, with his super powers, wouldn't be super immune to such a stone.

Because back in Season 2, he was the only man not infected by Lex's fiancee's kryptonite-enhanced pheromones. But with a show like Smallville, suspension of disbelief is a must. I was more excited by Lex's overt downward spiral into becoming the evil criminal mastermind that we all know and love. At first, I was befuddled by the sudden appearance of Simone and her sudden interest in seducing Clark. Her motivations were completely out of my reach. But low and behold, it was Lex who sent Simone to ruin Clark and Lana's relationship. And boy did he ever.

After walking in on Clark and Simone getting ready to do the nasty, Clark and Lana broke up....again. But Lana claims that it's for real this time. Sigh. I don't really know if it's for real, but I really hope it is. I'm ready for her to get with Lex, and Clark to start his tortured infatuation with Lois. But what I really want to know is, if Clark and Simone ended up having sex? All indicators point to yes, but we don't know for sure. If they did have sex, then we know that Clark is able to keep his super powers in check while getting physical. A point that the sexually-frustrated Lana probably wished he learned earlier in the season.

Professor Fine (aka Brainiac) has returned and is creating some sort of clone army in Honduras from the Terminator 2 goo that is leaking from the spaceship. I just love it when they go to exotic locations because you know that it's just a forest in Canada that was dressed up to look that way. I always get a chuckle out of that. I'm interested to see where they're going to go with this clone army, and how Lex will be involved. It's got season finale written all over it.

Finally, I was a little bit disappointed by the big face-off between Lex and Clark at the end. I had heard rumors that there was going to be this big confrontation between them, and I was disappointed that it was just another one of their fights where one or the other is not in their right mind. And when Clark throws Lex across the room through his desk, and Lex goes, "You're hypnotized, Clark. That's the only way you'd have the strength to throw me like that." I almost died laughing at that line. It was pretty cheesy. During filming, I just know that Michael Rosenbaum rolled his eyes at having to say that one.

I thi hnk I have nearly lost all interest in the show.
Perhaps now that Clarks first love is no longer the story line will improve.

The question is: If Clark was hypnotized, what would have stopped him from doing it, if he was under Simone's spell? and how would he had remembered what he had done anyways?

Chloe did ask clark if he and samone did it. He said they didn't.

Actually, I don't mind the fact that Clark was affected by the stone. Someone (Lex?) said that it was from ancient English alchemists or the like, and that in my mind says magic. And the one thing that Superman is always vulnerable to is magic (even in this series). Thus, he isn't affected by Lex's wife's krypto-pheromones, but is affected by Evil Lana and her Band of Witches in that episode.

I guess the rule is, you want to screw with Clark on "Smallville", order up some magic (or another Kryptonian).

Beyond that, this ep was a big meh.
