Was Woods interview an infomercial?

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 31st 2006 3:00PM
Ed BradleyRichard Sandomir at The New York Times openly questions the reasons behind Tiger Woods' appearance on 60 Minutes last weekend. I didn't watch the show, because I have no interest in Woods specifically or golf in general, but Sandomir brings up some interesting points:

"In the midst of Ed Bradley's worshipful two part profile of Tiger Woods on 60 Minutes last Sunday, I wondered if it was an infomercial or if Woods had paid a fee for these adoring 25 minutes. With nothing new to report - and not a single tough question in his arsenal - Bradley chose to join Camp Tiger."

So who saw this interview? Comments?

The trouble with the piece was the fact that "the facts" didn't make it through to all viewers. For instance, someone mentioned Tiger ponying up the entire $5 million bill for the learning center. Well, the center cost $25 million, and the corporate sponsors of the Tiger Woods Foundation kicked in plenty.

Tiger's contribution is completely impressive. But, there was nothing new in the piece, and what was most interesting was glossed over.

The story basically reminded us that Tiger Woods is still really good and still really rich. The stuff with and about his family was interesting but not news. I like Tiger so I enjoyed it, but was curious throughout what 60 Minutes was really "reporting" on, especially when it seemed like it was over then they came back from break with even more.

For someone like me who pays no attention to golf or Tiger, it was cool to see some amazing highlights and briefly step into the mind of the "most successful athelete ever." Yes it was light for 60 Minutes, but the $5M learning center he built with his own money for kids, looked like a rare "good news" story. The old men of 60 minutes can't always be catching bastards in a lie or making people cry. Cut them some slack.

It was an interesting look at an interesting guy. There was no hard hitting journalism, but there was really no need. The interview culminated with a look at Woods' new learning center(s), which he is clearly passionate about. It was the softball story of the night, but I don't see what's wrong with that.

I thought Larry King and Jay Leno did softball interviews, but geez, that was bad.

What do you expect? There isnt' much new to report about Tiger Woods. He's still fabulously rich, the best golfer in the world, and fierce about his privacy. He's also about the play in the biggest golf tournament of the year, the Masters, which will be airing on CBS, the same network as 60 minutes, next week. It was more of an ad for CBS' upcoming Masters coverage.

I saw some of it. It was a classic puff piece. They literally high fived each other at one point. Entertainment Tonight has more journalism than this did.
