The Daily Show: April 4, 2006
"Delay: The
Inevitable": Big news! Big news! Tom "The Hammer" Delay has announced his resignation! Cue lots of
cheers and applause from the Daily Show audience. That's right, Delay... no one likes you. Not since you stole
the Fonz's hairdo. And your lame reason for resignation ("Because I care so deeply about this district and the
people in it, I refuse to allow liberal Democrats an opportunity to steal this seat with a negative, personal
campaign") deserved nothing but sarcastic crying... which is what Jon heartily served up. Silly Delay.Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney stabbed an officer with
a cellphone after he stopped her at a congressional office building checkpoint because he didn't recognize her. She then
went on a rant about racism. Well, Jon doesn't judge people by the color of their skin, but the content of their
character and McKinney is definitely "batshit crazy". Senior Political Correspondent Rob Corddry joined in to
explain that, sometimes, in order to make the law, you have to break the law (similar to the way that vets learn about
feline health by strangling cats). In the end, McKinney and guys like Delay will need to face the country head-on and
ask, "Why do you keep electing idiots like us?"
"Citizen McCain": John McCain has been doing a
lot of sucking-up to the Republicans, as of late. McCain has been known for his fair share of dislike for the president
and the current administration, which is why his current constant support and praise has thrown people like Jon
off-guard. Jon was concerned enough to speak to McCain on the show (via satellite). McCain was pretty amiable but he
failed to really give any great responses as to why he made such a random change-of-heart.
The night's guest
was Studs Terkel, author of And They All Sang: Adventures of an Eclectic Disc Jockey. First thought: Holy crap, this guy is old. I was expecting an awkward struggle as Terkel made his way
through the interview, but it was very interesting. Terkel laughed and said that he was "deaf as a post" but
his conversation was very lively. He talked about how being an American meant being able to tell the president to
"Bugger off!" (even though I don't think many Americans actually use that phrase... unless they're pretending
to be British) and shared a story about catching a lady with her top undone. With a nickname like "Studs", I
guess that spirit is to be expected.
Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert can rhyme, yo. Moment of Zen: Christian
Values and Tom Delay get a rare moment of applause.
