Meredith Vieira to replace Katie Couric

by Anna Johns, posted Apr 6th 2006 11:39AM
meredith vieira; todayThis afternoon, NBC will officially announce the news that everybody already knows: Meredith Vieira is the next co-host of Today. Katie Couric will leave NBC in May to anchor the CBS Evening News (something that doesn't have Andy Rooney all that thrilled). Vieira has long been rumored to be in talks with NBC for the position. Although most of us know Meredith Vieira as the least annoying co-host of The View and as host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, she also has an extensive news background. I imagine that NBC considers her the perfect replacement since she's already a television 'personality' but she actually has experience as a journalist.

I wonder how Anne Curry feels about all this. She has filled in a lot for Katie and has gained a much larger role than just a news reader on Today. For a while there, she almost looked like the 'heir apparent'.

Sound off, readers! What do you think about Meredith Vieira??

Ann should have been the choice. She has paid her dues and is a truthfull, passionate and accurate journalist. I enjoy her work and am SO dissapointed they chose Meredith. She is not someone I will watch. And I watch the show every morning....I guess I will have to morning show shop in September. I can't imagine watching Matt Lauer deal with her...seems like a huge persoanlity clash waiting until happen. Yuk.

I like Meredith and think she'll do a good job on Today, I'd rather watch her than Katie Couric anyway. But I can't help but to feel that Ann Curry has been slighted. I've always thought that Ann would replace Katie at some point and very much wanted to see her in that role. You know, I don't think I've ever heard talk of Ann being in the running, wasn't there only three candidates mentioned?

Anyway, could it be that she was offered the job but for some reason turned it down? All we can do is wonder.

I always thought of Couric as pablum and "The View", as singullarly obnoxious. It surpirises me anyone can sit through an episode of that show! When I had cable, network TV was only an afterthought. Crap like this is the reason why.

These people are more celebrities that journalists. If Curry -- who, from what little I've seen, is less doll-like than Couric (actually Laur is less grating than Katie) -- cares that much about her profession, she can switch to invesigative writing; a lot less money but much more lattitue in subject matter and perspective.

That'll NEVER happen because this lot cares mostly about cash and putting their mugs in front of the camera.

Hasn't anyone noticed Campbell Brown's speach impediment? I like the lady, she has a well trained professional voice; but the impediment keeps coming through. It drives me nuts! JC

When I initially heared that Meredith Veira was in line for replacing Katie Couric "I thought what a joke!" Now, I'm shocked to hear the news! I'm really glad to see Katie Couric leaving, but why not replace her with Ann Curry or Campbell Brown? These are great women with so much intelligence, poise and add so much to the show. Campbell Brown would have really been my first choice, then Ann Curry. Hope they'll stick around!

I can't say I am surprise with this ...NBC replacing Katie Couric with Meredith "war built on lies" Vieira. Vieira can follow Katie Couric's footsteps and pretend to be unbiased to viewers while asking overtly tough questions to conservative guests and throwing soft balls at liberal guests.

Jacob, obviously some of us here don't understand the word "sarcasm"...it was just my way of taking a cheap shot at NBC and their loyalty to the liberal faith. I guess I should have gotten my point across by interchanging Sean Hannity's name with Bill O'Reilly.

Want to know the truth? NBC should have just pulled the trigger and replaced her with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. That's the direction that network seems to be headed anyway!

Bryce, dude did you actually suggest Sean Hannity???

I can't stand that guy. I'm not even talking about his politics here, just his style.

I can't stand Meredith Vierra. It should have been Campbell Brown or Anne Curry with Campbell at the newsdesk.

I guess I'll have to find something else to watch. The local WB affiliate shows Home Improvement and I loves me some Patricia Richardson.

Let me just say I'm happy they didn't go the "let's make it a reality bit to select the next co-host" route. They could have called it "Next on Today".

Yeah, let's be very glad they didn't do that.
