Will you take Vieira seriously if she's still on Millionaire?

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 6th 2006 9:02PM
Meredith Vieira as host of MillionaireWell, today's news about Katie Couric's replacement on Today was pretty unavoidable, wasn't it? As you know, Meredith Vieira will be the new co-anchor starting in September. It's a pretty nice coincidence for Vieira, since her contract for The View was up at the same time as Couric's NBC contract.

But Vieira still has two years left on her contract to host Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and there has been no word about whether she'll continue those duties after she starts on Today.

It's not the first time a morning news anchor has hosted a game show; Joe Garagiola hosted a couple of different game shows and was a panelist on To Tell The Truth during his late '60s - early '70s run on Today. And a morning news show anchor's job is probably more akin to what Meredith was doing with Barbara, Star, Joy and company than to being a hard news anchor.

But it is a news show, and despite Vieira's news background (I remember when she was an ace reporter on WCBS in the early '80s, as well as her stints on 60 Minutes and West 57th), her Millionaire gig might take away from her credibility. I'm not sure at this point, but it'll be interesting to see.

What do you think?  Let me know in the comments.

I am very disappointed that Merdith was appointed for the next 'leading lady' of the Today show. She was so abrasive on the View then too host a game show...! I just feel that all of the credibility that Katie has brought to the Today show her replacement should be someone of 'statue' not a condisending game/gossip/ TV personality. It is very sad that Anne Curry or Campbell Brown were not recognized for their journalism or their dedication to be promoted. It was as if the casting director deliberatly choose someone that was tacky and lacks credibility!

Today was the premiere of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. I watched it and was incredibly impressed. I love Couric and her news-delivering style. I also love Meredith Vieira as a talk show host (even though I'm not very fond of her gameshow hosting abilities). I agree with former comments that she should step down from Millionaire when the time comes--not because I don't like her, just because I, too, believe someone else needs a chance at it. Personally, I would like to see Mark L. Walhberg (who hosted the now-cancelled gameshow "Russian Roulette" on GSN a while back) take the host seat on Millionaire. Also, is there any chance we could get Millionaire back in the evening lineup? I HATE that it's in the morning!

I think we should all give Meredith a chance and THEN post comments. NBC knows something we don't or they wouldn't have hired her.

Meredith will do a fantastic job in anything she does. She is very professional, bright, and likeable.

I think Meredith is one of the most versatile celebrities on television. She makes an excellent game show host with the best people skills I've ever seen. She knows how to relate to EVERY person -from the nervous to the outlandish equally, and adjusts rapidly to anyone in the "hot seat". Her sense of humor, and ability to make the game interesting and unpredictable is a great asset. I would hate to see her leave Millionaire. Because of all this, and in light of her previous journalism experience, I believe she will also make an excellent anchor on "Today".

Unless she is wearing a clown's nose while reading the newscopy (that she will not generate),yes I will take her seriously. By the way, the venerable Hugh Downs, former co-host of 20/20 and the Today Show, was also the mc of a little game show called Concentration, that was on at the same time. I guess nobody thought to question his seriousness.

I think Merideth is so boring! She's not very funny or witty, not particularly stlyish, she's kind of a flat liner....and absolutely no compliment to matt. I wish ann curry was taking the position...she's awesome!
