Will you take Vieira seriously if she's still on Millionaire?
Well,
today's news about Katie Couric's replacement on Today was pretty unavoidable, wasn't it? As you know,
Meredith Vieira will be the new co-anchor starting in September. It's a pretty nice coincidence for Vieira, since her
contract for The View was up at the same time as Couric's NBC contract. But Vieira still has two years left on her contract to host Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and there has been no word about whether she'll continue those duties after she starts on Today.
It's not the first time a morning news anchor has hosted a game show; Joe Garagiola hosted a couple of different game shows and was a panelist on To Tell The Truth during his late '60s - early '70s run on Today. And a morning news show anchor's job is probably more akin to what Meredith was doing with Barbara, Star, Joy and company than to being a hard news anchor.
But it is a news show, and despite Vieira's news background (I remember when she was an ace reporter on WCBS in the early '80s, as well as her stints on 60 Minutes and West 57th), her Millionaire gig might take away from her credibility. I'm not sure at this point, but it'll be interesting to see.
