Goodbye Heist

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 7th 2006 4:09PM
HeistWell, that happened a lot quicker than I expected.

Heist, the stylish NBC robbery drama, has already been axed by the network, Michael Ausiello is reporting at his site (hey, Ausiello has a site? Cool.).

Come on, this was a limited-run show anyway, why not let it play out? I caught a couple of eps, and while I was bugged by Dougray Scott's accent, I thought it was a rather fun, clever show, and I certainly wanted to see what happened next. But I guess NBC needs the hour for another episode of Deal Or No Deal.

[UPDATE: Writer/creator Mark Cullen confirms the cancellation in a comment below.]

I've been watching Heist here in the UK for the past 6 weeks and had no idea until tonight when watching the sixth episode that we weren't going to get the full series.

I loved this show, and am so so disappointed that ITV here in the UK gave us it knowing it was only half a series. I am furious, it's like buying a book and finding that the last few chapters are missing.

Does anyone know if they actually made the full series or not? I know they have only shown 6 episodes of a supposed 13 but did they actually make the full 13 and just not show them all or did they stop filming after 6? If they did then hopefully they'll get it out on DVD and pretty soon as I really would like to see how this ends.

One thing is for sure, I won't be watching anymore American shows after this. Sorry, I love Americans in general and you guys keep coming up with some really fantastic shows but I just always am left feeling conned. Shows like Lost and Prison Break were awesome in the beginning, but never getting a proper ending was frustrating, the viewers are just being conned with these shows, the makers are milking them and whilst they start out brilliant by the time the third series come around it's obviously that the writers have no idea where they are going and are rushing things, but it has reached new heights now with Heist with us only getting half a series and I am so disappointed.

I agree - its such a shame when a show is just starting to develop that it ends.

I actually looked forward to each ep, unusual for me. And when the anchor said the other day 'that's it, there is no more' I was shocked!

By the way, we got to see 'Ladies and Gentlemen, sweaty dynamite' here in the UK.

So - any answers to the question above - were more episodes made and any chance of a DVD?

And if Lola's free she can come fix my computer anytime... what a gorgeous girl!

Andy.

Loved the show, so so sad to see it axed. The lines were so witty! Shame, someone shoulda given it a chance to at least finish the season.

I was assuming the show was on hiatus because of the time slot it was moved to. I thought "they dare not compete with Lost and Criminal Minds, do they? Surely not so early in the game". I was really bummed to see that it had been cancelled. I think it is a mistake. I really liked the characters (except the female cop: I thought she was overshadowed too easily by any and all of the other actors). I especially liked the older man and the girl thief. If there is someway to give it another chance-perhaps not in such a time slot to begin with, perhaps this summer!!!!!!! I think that people would like to see whether or not they can pull it off. Rooting for the criminals? We do it in the movies sometimes, why not television?

Respectfully,
Jerri

I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!! I have been waiting to see what happened when the lady detective got shot.....Now I guess I will never know....I loved the quick wit of Billy and the actors were great in my opinion. Very well rounded and the banter that went on between the two theifs about her sleeping with him was hilarious. Sure do wish NBC would have at least let the remaining episodes finish airing.

I'm not a critic. I don't analyze wardrobe, cinematography, lighting, sound, . . . or whatever. I have no clue what it takes to make a TV show (except for the obvious: cameras, actors, sets, etc.). I'm a simple (read: ignorant) TV watcher who knows nothing about story lines, the mechanics of shooting a show, or anything really. In a way, you could say this is a “pure” review of the show, from an entertainment perspective only, since I derive no entertainment value from ogling over the technicalities of TV-making, the relative cleverness of jokes or plot lines, or even from the acting ability of the cast for that matter. With all that said, take it for what it's worth, I loved the show. I'm upset NBC cancelled this show without giving it a decent chance to get going. I think, without a lot of hype and promotion, most great shows have to gain momentum in their first season. Someone mentioned Monk and Seinfeld as examples; and, even House and Grey's Anatomy come to mind (although I don't know what their ratings ever were, it seems like it took a while for those shows to heat up). Heck, even Lost took a while for me to actually start watching. I watched the entire first season on DVD because I never really got that it was a pretty good show during the season. I think Prison Break even started off a little slow, and that was promoted heavily I think. Anyway, my point is the show never really got a fair shot. Whether it got great ratings or not in the first few eps seems irrelevant. I think it definitely showed potential, even against some pretty tough competition. It should have at least played out the first season because it did have a following, albeit small. In my opinion, the worst that should've happened was to switch it to a less primetime slot, and let it die after the first season if that were its true fate. I’m sure NBC could’ve found a crappy show to replace one hour a week. My wife and I looked forward to this show every week, and we were just starting to chat it up to others. I was certain it would catch on (that happens a lot to the shows I like). I can't tell you how many times I've loved a show before it was popular, only to find that the show becomes a hit sometime at the end of the first or beginning of the second season. It takes time to spread, particularly if there is not an extremely aggressive promotion campaign. To expect great ratings so quickly after its debut, especially against Lost, it would need to be promoted heavily during some of NBC’s most popular shows. It seems like just plain old common sense. Heist’s failure did not result from a bad product by the creators; it was definitely the result of mismanagement by NBC! Shame on you NBC; you are really just hurting yourself. I’ll move on to something else, I’d probably buy it on DVD if it came out, but NBC will take some serious blows if they keep up this management style. It’s like selling a stock if it hasn’t yielded a HUGE return in just three days. You take the hit on commission every three days, then you’ve gotta buy something else to try again. If this goes on long enough, sure, you might end up with a huge hit once in a while, but you’ll only be digging your way out of the big hole created by all your previous attempts. Forget the creative aspect of the show, that’s just bad business.

For once, a truly entertaining show is aired, and NBC has pulled the plug? Heist was a fresh, edgy, series that made you want to tune in next week to see what would happen next. NBC screwed around with this shows time slot and did nothing to help it succeed. They should take a lesson from FX or USA and air quality programing during the summer months.....such as Monk, Rescue Me. That is an easy way to build an audience. I guess we loyal viewers won't be allowed to see the remaining episodes.......what a crock! Please.....no more "Deal or No Deal - like" or reality shows, I beg of you!!!! Intelligent viewers can't take it!

I am so pissed off at all of tv. It seems lately that the smarter the show the less chance it has. This show was great, and done in a slick, smart way. I guess all of america except for me has been brianwashed into thinking that reality tv is actually reality. GIVE ME A BREAK, you want to talk about bad acting reality tv is terrible. I now know why tv makes people dumb, it is because of reality tv.
