Smallville: Void

by Lacy Hall, posted Apr 7th 2006 1:05PM

lex lionelIn last night's episode, Lana becomes addicted to flatlining so she can spend some quality time with her dead parents. Eh, at this point in the series, I find Lana-centric episodes only slightly more exciting than Chloe-driven plots. Plus, I was slightly disappointing with the lack of time that Lana was actually spending in the hereafter. From the previews, I thought she was going to be spending some quality time with her parents, not just 10 second teasers. I guess Lana felt the same way and that's how she became addicted to the kryptonite-serum that was inducing the flatline.

But still, for the sake of television...

I would have liked a little bit more time. Lana visiting her parents means nothing to me. But now, Lex seeing is dead mom is awesome. Lex ends up getting stabbed with the death juice when he comes to protect Lana from another flatline. (Plus, she stole one of his cars to pay for her next death fix.) Lex ends up (unwillingly) getting stabbed in the neck by the evil med student who invented the stuff.

Right when that syringe lunged into Lex's neck, I thought, "he's going to hell." I thought we were going to see another shot of him in that Colonel Sanders white suit standing over all those skeletons. Instead, his mom, Lilly, is waiting for him, and she's pissed off that he didn't take her advice in Lexmas, and stick with a righteous path. She also told him that one day his soul would be stained with the blood of the millions he will kill. When Lex looked at her in confusion, she held up his hand to reveal that he was wearing a black leather OJ glove. I seriously didn't get the glove bit, but I just hope it's explained later.

With Lex temporarily dead, Clark comes to Lana's rescue and also gets stabbed by the evil med student in the heart with the kryptonite death juice. When Clark dies he sees his dad, Jonathan Kent, who warns him that Lionel Luthor knows of his secret. Clark is able to pull himself out of the flatline (everybody else had to use a neutralizing serum) because when he died the kryptonite in his system naturally neutralized itself. The way Chloe explained this made it sound like this is a fact taken from the comic series. If any of you comic book nerds out there know either way on this than an explanation would be greatly appreciated. In fact, if any little nuances from the show ever relates directly to the comic series (like Lex's glove, perhaps?) than please drop some knowledge on me. I never followed the comic series, but I love finding out those little details, and so would others.

A side plot  was Clark's quest to find Professor Fine in South America. Chloe digs up a news photo with Fine hiding behind some trees (we find out later that Lionel sent her the photo), so Clark takes a quick jog down to South America to look for Fine. Shortly after arriving, he finds a small boy who is widdling a depiction of the spaceship and Clark asks to be taken to it. But alas, no spaceship, only the impression of the spaceship remains.

The last intriguing subplot is between Lionel Luthor and Martha Kent. Lionel is wasting no time in pursing the newly widowed Martha, even though she bluntly told him that a romantic relationship between them would never take place. Regardless, Lionel escorts Martha to a political function, and when Clark (aware now that Lionel knows his secret) discovers this he looks enraged.

Next week's preview shows Lex and Lana finally smooching. I'm super excited about this. If she doesn't go the way of evil Lex than I'm going to be very disappointed. Also, the episode was directed by Tom Welling, so I'm excited to see what he can do.

The song Lex is playing in the episode "Void" is Impromptu (or Impromptus) #3 op90, by Schubert I believe.

What was Lex playing on the piano in Void? How does one find the music credits for these classical pieces? Inquiring minds....

Thanks,
John

I liked this episode the first time when it was called "Flatliners" staring Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland.

And I LOVE how Honduras looks like this lovely little village town with Mexicans dressed in new bright colored ponchos. I mean, if that wasn't Canadas take on a third world country, I don't know what is.

I'm waiting for Lionel to blurt out something like Hey, Im actually Dr. Swann we traded bodies with the transference stone! Ha! HA! Maybe that's just me.

The kryptonite serum didn't automatically neutralize in Clark's body. When he came back Chloe was there. She said "I figured if the green stuff killed you then the other stuff would bring you back. What? You were already dead!" so she gave him the orange colored antidote that was there as well. Her explanation later was apparently why the kryptonite serum was no longer hurting him.

One minor correction to Drexl's post. In the comics they didn't so much "transfer Lex's thoughts" as much as they "saved his brain". The latter being the actual title of the issue when they finally explained where the Luther heir had come from about six months to a year after the the character was introduced. The red hair that he had achieved was thanks to the new body they had grown around his brain. I fun comic to read for sure.

I'm pretty sure that Clark was supposed to be under the impression that Lionel doesn't remember anything he did while he was being controlled by Jor-El. That puts Lionel and Lex on the same, basic page; they know that there is something different about Clark but they don't know what exactly.

What we've seen of Lionel makes me think that Jor-El is still in there and actively controlling Lionel's body. His interaction with Clark lately has been very different then before. His attitude has been almost fatherly towards Clark. And not the type of fatherly attitude that Lionel has had for Lex or Lucas.

I got the impression Lionel would remember something from beig Jor-el's spirit but I think him seeing the surveillance video gave him what he needed to know, he's always suspected Clark being different. I think when Clark saved Lionel from the Angel of Vengence girl it peak Lionel's curiosity more.

Lacy,.. not to be too anal or anything, but it's "Whittling" not "Widdling". I'm sure it was Kryptonite in your coffee or something. I forgive you.

On a side note,.. did I miss something earlier in the season? I thought Lionel somehow became the carrier for Jor-El's spirit and was able to help Clark in certain situations. Moreover, I thought that Clark already knew that Lionel/Jor-El knew about him.

I'm so confused.

I think they are doing a marvelous job with Smallville this season, especially with the tie-ins to the Daily Planet, which I hope they will expand. Lois is the character I look forward to the most. Lionel Luthor has come back strong. I think Clark needs to start moving forward soon, he seems to have stalled lately with the Clark-Lana round robins.
