Spielberg, Burnett on board for new reality series

steven spielberg; mark burnettJust when I hoped thought reality television was on its way out, Steven Spielberg enters the fray. He has teamed up with reality television genius Mark Burnett. The new show for FOX is called On the Lot and it's described as a cross between American Idol and The Apprentice (huh?). Here's how it works: 16 finalists will divide into two teams. Each team has to write, direct, and edit a short film from a different genre each week. The excitement will be in all the usual frustrations that face filmmakers such as budgetary issues, creative differences, time crunch, and high-maintenance talent. Like American Idol, the show will air two nights each week. The first night will be the showings of the contestants' films and the second night will be the "box office", where someone gets booted out of the competition. The films will be judged by a panel of experts. The ultimate winner gets a studio deal with Dreamworks. Sweet!

I've wanted a chance like this for the last 20 years. Steven Spielberg has been my role model as an independent filmmaker since I was 17. This is literally my lifelong goal. I've produced two short films in college, majoring in Film, Radio, and television production. I know I would be a perfect fit as a finalist. I bring that 20 years of experience to the table. How can I sign up or audition?

This is a bit off topic, but I'd like to see a scripted show with a group of 5 or 6 actors that do "short story" episodes, where they play different characters and do different genres each episode. They could start with a cast of versatile, established actors and bring in different directors for each episode.

If the short films are any good, this might actually be kind of entertaining. If they suck, it'll just be really painful.
