Survivor: Exile Island: Episode 8

by Deidre Woollard, posted Apr 7th 2006 12:37AM
Terry is determined to not go quietly but his military approach doesn't seem to work well with Casa Dysfunction. It's like having a strict stepdad suddenly come to a disordered family of sulky teenagers. The episode starts with a reward challenge designed to shake up tribal lines. Tribes of three compete for bed and breakfast. Aras gets everyone to go for the team of Terry, Austin and Shane and so Aras, Sally and Bruce are able to best the team of men.

And then the rains come making the reward a little less delightful. Sally, Bruce and Aras find that their breakfast in bed is all soaked but the food makes it worth it. Meanwhile, Danielle and Austin suffer in the rain on Exile Island huddled up together.

Back at camp, Terry just won't give in, he is always playing and always forceful. He quizzes Shane on the pecking order for the final four and finds out who Shane envisions making it to the final four. He immediately begins hatching a plan to shake loose the other two.  When the happy breakfasters return Sally shows off her full stomach. They didn't manage to sneak any treats back to their tribe either. Eager to work on his plan, Terry confesses to Sally that he has the immunity idol. She is immediately agog at Terry's mastery.  Even though their entire team has been decimated, she still seems to see Terry as the all-powerful, all-knowing.The immunity challenge is a multi-phase challenge that starts with digging through sand. Courtney, Sally, Danielle, Terry, Shane and Austin make it to the second round. For the final round it's Sally, Terry and Austin. Sally and Terry battle it out for immunity. It seems like Casaya isn't really trying for immunity because they don't need it at this point. Sally's tough this time, maybe all she needed was a good breakfast but Terry wins again. You'd think that Casaya would at least try for immunity for a chance to get rid of Terry.

Austin is certain his number is up but Terry has a plan. He tells Austin he has the idol and concocts a plan to lure Danielle over to the other side. Austin is elated and they immediately start working on Bruce. Meanwhile the Casaya tribe bickers over who to get rid of. Aras wants Austin off which gets Courtney up in arms and the tribe starts to fracture yet again. Seizing the opportunity, Austin and Terry present their offer to Danielle.  She is aware that she is in the power spot and seems to be mulling things over (at least that's what I think all that lip biting is about). At tribal, Austin references their bonding experience and Danielle agrees that it was significant (a rain-soaked hookup perhaps?). Jeff pushes Bruce and Danielle on the knowledge that they might be at the bottom of the Casaya pecking order. Shane says its impossible that two people from his team would flop over. It comes down to Austin and Aras and Austin gets voted out. Austin and Sally may think he's a stud but the Casaya tribe members know he is too much of a threat to bond with. I get the feeling that this episode was edited to make Casa Dysfunction appear more uncertain than they were. They can't stand each other but they do stick together.  Terry's big exposure didn't win him any results and now everyone knows that he will be doubly impossible to shake.
Player of the week: Terry tried hard but it seems that Aras is the man in power. They didn't show a lot of Shane this episode but he looks like he is falling apart.

Why is Shane still there? The remaining survivors talk about how Courtney cannot shut up and how annoying she is but frankly Shane is the one that is constantly talking, yelling, throwing a tantrum, uttering the most idiotic things and to me is in the same category as Johnny Fair Play or Boston Rob-arrogant and irritating. If Shane wins I will not watch Survivor again and all of the people I have been talking to about him agree.

Ciree is playing the smartest game, historically speaking. Doing nothing except always voting in the majority is the playbook of a lot of winners. Sandra had it down pat, and then spent the entire final tribal council saying that was her strategy, and she won. Same with Amber (in All-Stars) and Tina. The tacticians, like the two Robs, rarely finish first.

She might not be fun to watch, but my money is on her. You end up going a long way when you never present a compelling reason for people to vote against you.

Actually, thinking about it, the immunity idol does present an interesting situation. As long as Terry or Sally can get immunity, neither of them can be voted out, and (presuming that Casaya votes together), they are in control of who on the other team gets knocked off. Because of that, they can threaten Danielle and Bruce with elimination to flip them, hopefully creating a permanent division in Casaya (can't be hard to do that). As a matter of fact, now that it's known that they have the immunity idol, it's pretty much their only useful play. If they can get a third Casaya, they won't have to give up the idol. That brings it to 2-5. Then, if one of them gets immunity next week, they can do the same thing, but it won't require the third Casaya (important not to be outnumbered on your own team) in order to retain the immunity idol. That should pretty much seal the rift between Casaya and flipped-Casaya. It's a hail Mary, in that it requires one of them to win immunity and to be smarter than they have been, but they can potentially bring things to even. This immunity idol has a lot of potential, I'm glad it's finally coming into play.

I would agree Mark, but putting myself in Terry's shoes, it was a huge risk. I'm thinking that last week Terry thought his best chance of flipping anyone would have been Bruce, whom both seem to have a mutual respect for each other. When that didn't happen in the vote I am guessing he didn't want to take a chance on giving it up so soon in saving Dan without trying the tactic of working harder to flip more this past week.

Personally, I think he had a much better chance of flipping two this week than one last week because he had a few days to bond with them and plant seeds of doubt in their alliance. I thought for sure at least Bruce would come over after he told him about his position on the pecking order. Saving Austin would have put a big target on his own back next week if he does not win immunity.

It's a solo game for Terry now and if they vote off Sally next week, then Casaya will fall apart, because no one is going to want to be the sacraficial lamb to vote Terry off. When Terry stands alone is when some of the others are going to cut deals with him.

Terry may not make it to the end, but if I had to lay money on the line, I say he lasts longer than Shane and Aras.

LC: It would have been better if they had used the idol last week. 5-4 is their best odds. That would then only require them to flip one person, which is much easier than flipping two (though, granted, with much reduced bargaining power). Last night was a last ditch effort and its better to use the immunity idol for yourself than to give it up, especially as the numbers decrease. Now the only thing Terry can do with the idol is get a three-day extension on the inevitable. I wish Rob C. was here, he'd do something fun with the idol, probably even if he didn't have it.

I don't know why teams try to flip people by offering them bottom rung on their tribe vs. bottom of the rung on their opponent's. Why not say "Look, the only thing we can do is offer final three, and the rest of us have to take our chances".

BTW the strategy I listed above was only if they wanted to force Terry to use the idol.

Robert, They have zero shot of voting Terry off due to his still holding the idol, but they can all vote off Sally is she fails to win immunity. The problem is that one of them is then gauranteed to go home the following week because even if they do vote for Terry, he will use the idol and one of them would then go home.

If this is the case I am guessing that Aras and Shane would hatch a plot by telling the team to all vote for Terry to make him use the idol, but secretly the two of them would choose Danielle, Bruce or Courtney, that way when Terry uses his Idol one of them is then booted off.

Terry played the immunity idol the only way that could be played with the hand he was dealt. He tried flipping two of Casaya's members in a gamble that ultimately failed. Let's say that he did save Austin with the idol or even Dan last week. that would have only eliminated one Casaya while at the same time eliminated Terry's get out of jail free card for the future because Casaya would have still outnumbered them 5-4 if he saved Dan and 5-3 if he saved Austin.

Bruce has already been proved to be unflippable as is the rest of Casaya.

If they are smart and if Terry or Sally lose immunity next week, Casaya should have four of themselves vote for Terry and the other two vote Sally. This would force Terry to use the idol and cause a tie between Sally and whoever Terry and Sally choose.

Terry and Sally should then choose Aras or Shane based on the amount of votes they had against them in the past. They know Aras had a bunch of votes this week and Shane last week. I don't believe Sally has any since the week she would have been booted she went to exile island. It would be ironic if Shanes throwaway vote for Aras several weeks ago came back to bite him in the ass.

I agree that the hidden immunity idol has turned it into a bunch of misfits getting far in the game. I love Ciree's flying under the radar for so long, that's fun to watch. Terry and Sally are the most-deserving players to win. Courtney and Shane both get on my nerves for just an hour every week, I can't imagine what the other survivors are going through living with them 24/7!!! My sympathies....

Actually I think if neither Sally or Terry win immunity, one of them goes home. All the other team has to do is split the vote between the two. They both get 3 votes, and they only have 2 votes, so no matter what, one of them goes home.

Ang: That wasn't needed, they could have accomplished the same thing by using the Idol to save Austin.. Aras would have been gone.

I'm very confused by last night's episode. I don't see why Danielle wouldn't have taken that offer?? Perhaps they forgot last year, where the ace in the hole won the girl the whole game.

These people will be very scared to gang up to vote on Terry, because they know with the idol in his pocket, it's the #2 in votes that's going home - not him.

I'm also surprised that Terry didn't save Austin. This was the point to try and flip the game, and using it on Austin, would have cut the head off the other group in Aras. I understand it from the selfish point of view for Terry, but it would have made his group stronger to get to the 3/4.
