The gigantic Maxim cover is real... but did Google Earth see it?

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 7th 2006 5:17PM
Huge picture of Eva LongoriaYesterday, we told you about a publicity stunt that Maxim performed to celebrate its 100th issue. It involved a Nevada desert, a whole lot of mesh, and a gigantic picture of Eva Longoria. But it seems like, though the 75x100 foot cover exists, and may have been laid out in the desert and photographed, it wasn't actually picked up by Google Earth's satellite cameras. This article in Jossip breaks it down; it seems as if the picture was taken then overlayed on top of Google Earth's satellite picture, mainly because of timing issues (the Google shots are usually a number of days old).

Oh, well. I still wanted to make jokes about it, though. I mean, how could I pass up an opportunity to make a cheap "Eva's mounds" crack?

(Also, reader tozmervo mentioned this on a comment under the original post. Sorry I didn't believe you, tozmervo!)

Days? Try YEARS. Google Earth isn't a real-time system, nor anything anywhere close. See, Google doesn't actually have any satellite cameras (not that they couldn't afford them with their inflated stock prices)...all they do is compile images that other companies have taken of the planet. That's why you can drill down to great detail in urban areas of the planet, but rural areas have very little detail: The original owners of the satellite data had no interest in some of the data, so they threw it away.

Yeah the only way you can see it is by opening the .kml file. Though, I did notice, they decided to kill two birds during the Magazine fly-over. Just last week I was looking at Las Vegas via Google Earth and noticed how the Wynn casino/hotel was still in it's construction-phase. Now if you travel the strip, it's there in all it's reflective glory. So at least something has been updated!
