Disney/ABC streaming video may be too ambitious

by Anna Johns, posted Apr 14th 2006 8:03AM
abc logoABC and Disney's grand announcement that they will soon stream episodes of Alias, Commander in Chief, Lost and Desperate Housewives for free on ABC's website may not be so great after all. Some critics say that ABC and Disney have taken on a project that may be too ambitious. According to this article on MSNBC, some web analysts say Disney needs to make some major changes in order to stream the shows in high quality. It says, "the technological demands involved in sending individual video streams across the network to each viewer are likely to prove too taxing for existing infrastructure."

The bandwidth required for streaming video for so many LOST fans would have to be gigantic. Incredibly, the bandwidth required to seed a bittorrent file is something that any 15 year old could afford. I suppose there is some problem with contracts that prevent them from actually providing a downloadable file. If not, I would think it might be cheaper to commission a software company to create a special media player that plays the videos with some sort of advertising integrated into it. The video wouldn't play without the advertising and the ads would actually be in a separate file that changes when new advertisers join in. Since they would not be restricted to an hour, there could actually be some bonus features online. Obviously, the desire for downloadable videos already exists. ABC would have an edge by adding some sort of bonus to the video. If the bonus was an interview with one of the actors in a Jaguar (sponsor) - then the ad is part of the bonus feature. Certainly, the possibilities abound.

Yeah, it definitely needs to be streamed high quality. Right now, I can get 960X528 files with 5.1 sound off of bittorrent. If they want people to stop using bittorrent, they'll have to make the quality better than it.
