Germans not happy with Popetown

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 14th 2006 11:01AM
popetownMTV's decision to start airing an animated series in Germany called Popetown which features a corrupt Vatican and a childlike Pope who bounds around on a pogo stick is already catching flak from some Catholic groups. The series was created two years ago for the BBC, which banned it at the last minute over fear of controversy. Now MTV has courted even more controversy with a print advertisement for the new series which shows Jesus descended from the cross and laughing in front of the TV, crown of thorns still on his head. Despite threats of legal action, the series will still debut in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland on May 3.

Frank, have you even read the constitution? No where does it ever say seperation of chruch and state. That phrase was taken out of a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to a church. That phrase was taken out of context as well, it wasn't ment to keep the chruch out of the Government, it was ment to keep the government out of the church so that what happend in England wouldn't happen over here.

Fred (blog #31), have you never heard of the NEA, the National Educational Association, actually a teachers UNION, with all the attributes of a union. I won't go into detail here, but they are the worst thing that ever happened to education in the U.S. And I agree with you that the National Endowment for the Arts is a worthwhile organization, although a little batty once in a while.

Hey Sue, where do you stop censoring what people see and hear? Just because YOU don't like something doesn't mean it has to be "yanked from the airways" as you said? Who made you the person who decides what I see or don't see?

People have been poking fun at figures of religion, satirizing beliefs, and generally knocking on stories, ideas, ideals, practices, traditions, and basically everything about religion since the very start of civilization and religion. Everything dealing with religion has been parodied or "skewered," (as some people have said). When something like that happens, said religion doesn't automatically become threatened. Don't get all worked up about this. Also, the people are not making fun of the religion itself, just some things about the religion. Cartoons spoof a religious character and suddenly people are like, "They put our very system of beliefs on the chopping block and we must retaliate by acting absolutely crazy."
This happens and I'm like, "HEY, THIS IS A CARTOON!!! CARTOONS SATIRIZE EVERYTHING! WHY ARE YOU GETTING ALL UPSET AND EXTREME?! EVERYBODY, JUST BE RATIONAL WHEN SUCH THINGS OCCUR!! NOBODY KILLED OR HARMED RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO MAKE THIS, AND NOBODY'S GETTING KILLED OR HARMED THROUGH THIS! LET THIS THING GO AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIVES, WHICH I AM PRETTY DANG SURE ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU AND OTHER PEOPLE THAN, LETS SAY, A CARTOON!!" Let me end by sharing one last thought, an idea with which I feel that everyone can agree: Religion is funny.

I hope every one is doing well today. Not that it's easter or some other religous holiday. Let me first say that I find it very funny how any religous group other than thoughs of god and christ can be made fun of or destroyed, but as soon as someone makes fun of or attacks Judaism in any form is wrong. I mean come. History tells use that the hebrews never forced anyone to convert but christans have been doing it to everyone for centuries. They want to stop someone from making fun of them or telling the truth of history. Second, they have have a right not to like it but do not have the right to stop jokes or edit history book to suit them either under the pretence of family values. I mean come on kids are bad because of parents not T.V.. Please you got to be kidding me. I came out fine. I help people when I can, I don't kill or mame people and I don't worship the hebrew god. In the end the Faithful leaders that wrote the constitution wrote in that there should be a seperation of church and state for a reason. The reason was to keep the christan church from having total power over the people like thy did in other countries. Funny how in the Tora I hope I spelled that right it tells of Moses tell pharoh that his god comands,"Let my people go." Not Pharoh your god and my god are the same and he says let my our people go. Remember that one and all. Remember you have the right not to agree with me and say so, but you don't have the right to censure or stop me from saying my peace. Once again every one have a good day and live well.

Isn't the Easter Bunny a mockery of Christianity?
Isn't Santa a mockery of Jesus' birth?

And yet even Catholics go on Easter Egg Hunts, and most everyone will purchase gifts for under the tree at Christmas time... So the conflict arises: Which is more of a joke? Easter and Christmas? or Popetown? Food for thought. I suggest that people stop complaining about the belittling of their faith by others and focus on building their own faith for themselves. The "faithful" are forever looking at the "faithless" as lesser people who's "minds are so open their brains have fallen out..." So do as God says, pay attention to the plank in your own eye before attending the splinter in your brother's... that is, recognize how you belittle your own God first before complaining about someone else doing the same... recognize first how you look down on other people's beliefs rather than just feeling persecuted for your own.

Now, I'm off to paint Easter Eggs so I can hide them from children, Just like Jesus...

Dear Herb,
As you wrote
"I am appalled by the level of illiteracy shown by these blogs. Unfortunately, it is an excellent example of the quality of education now imposed on our current school system. And one of the biggest culprits is the NEA. Their fixation on inserting dubious social programs into the curriculum (read: "Heather has two mommies") instead of the basics (read, write, spell, speak, know math and history) leaves graduates foundered in the maze of an inscrutable, unfriendly world, without the necessary intellectual tools to cope with an increasingly technological world that has no use for people who can't read-write-spell-speak, do math, or know their heritage."

I guess your teachers in the 30's and 40's never taught you what a run-on sentence is? The NEA has nothing to do with poor education. It is an endowment to support the arts. They have nothing to do with "Heather Has Two Mommy's" either. I hope that when I'm your age I have a better focus on the real source of problems in the world.

At least the Germans aren't resorting to violence like the scumbag Muslims were when their religous sensibilities were insulted a few weeks ago. The difference must lie in the fact that the Muslims are uncivilized animals.
