The joy of not watching TV

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 16th 2006 6:20PM
Kiefer SutherlandIn the past several days, I've given up on two new TV shows: American Inventor and The Loop. I gave up on American Inventor because most of the inventions shouldn't even had made it that far, and the whole thing is way too touchy-feely. I gave up on The Loop because, well, it's not funny.

But I find this "giving up on TV shows" to be quite liberating. When you watch television for a living, it's hard to keep track of everything that's on. And when you're head is filled up with too many shows and characters and plots, it's a relief when you finally decide, you know what? I'm not going to watch this show anymore. It frees up space in your head and gives you time to watch something else.

This can be a bad thing too, I guess. I never got into 24 because I was already watching another spy drama, Alias, and I'm probably missing out there. I never watch E-Ring because I'm a fan of The West Wing, and one military/political/D.C. drama is enough for me right now. I never got into The Amazing Race, because I already watch Survivor and American Idol and Airline and Little People, Big World, and one more reality show will drive me made (granted, TAR is more a game show, but you know what I mean).

I wish I could stop watching ER, because the show's been kinda boring lately. But I've put 10 years into it, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to see how it ends.

This year I've "canceled" Survivor and Amazing Race, because I've been nothing but bored all year with them. (Alas, I only "canceled" them last week.) I've also been bored with Survivor last season too, and AR had The Kids Season (nuff said). It is kind of nice to get 2 hours of life back instead of just waiting for the show to end.

I'm pretty bored with 24 and The O.C. this season most of the time, but not quite enough to quit them...yet. But most of the time I find myself not even LOOKING at the TV screen when I "watch" any more. It's really sad.

I call it "cancelling" a show. I watched NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order, ER, 24, The O.C., The Simpsons, and Desperate Housewives, to name a handful, from the very first episodes. But after a season or a few (I lasted about 8 years on The Simpsons, maybe 5 years on NYPD, ER, and L&O, about 3 on X-Files, one for 24, 2 for The O.C., and 1.5 for DH) I just decided I had enough or didn't care anymore, and gave up on them. The shows had sunk into boring formula. In every case, it was liberating, and I have no regrets, no matter how long they went on, or how popular they got.

I've only gone back on one show: The West Wing. I LOVED this show. After about 2 seasons, it started fading, and by the start of last season (S6), with John Wells having had a year to ruin it, I gave up. About a month later a close friend who'd stuck it out told me it really had improved. I gave it another try, and have stuck with it since (and am very glad I did!)

I gave up on Commander in Chief, Medium,Apprentice, LO:SVU, and LO:CI. I've given up on Lost in spirit since sometime in season 1 but I stick around cause my friend likes it.

That leaves 24, Sopranos, Alias, One Tree Hill, L&O, OC, Las Vegas, Desperate Housewives, West Wing, The L Word(season has ended now), Nip/Tuck(between seasons), and 4400(between seasons) that I still watch.

If you don't pick up all the past seasons of 24 on DVD, Jack Bauer will break into your house and cut your right eye out.

Just sayin'.

And CherrySlurpees: you could do the same thing with a steak, but it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable.

Is it possible to 'quit watching' a show that's no longer on the schedule?

This past Thursday's episode of THE LOOP was the season finale.

I think I'm going to quit watching KNIGHT RIDER. :)

I watched a rerun of The Loop last week and thought it was surprisingly good.

I've given up on all but Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. I'd still watch Lost if I was home on Wednesday Nights, but, I'm not. I've recorded a few eps, but, never got around to watching 'em. I guess I don't miss that show as much as I thought I would.

I'm definately prefering music over TV these days.
