Are you ready for Band in a Bubble?

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 17th 2006 6:01PM
The DarknessThis sounds like a Saturday Night Live sketch, but it's true (I think).

A new British reality show, Band in a Bubble, will encase a band in a giant block of glass, near Trafalgar Square, and force them to write and record an album in one month. The Darkness has been approached to participate, but there's no word yet on whether or not they will do it.

I think this sounds ridiculous. I mean, maybe if it was The Who or something, a band that we would be interested in watching anyway, whether it was a reality show about being inside a glass box or just a straight documentary. But what's the real attraction here, other than a basic "wow, look how far reality shows have gone?"

Ya, but can it compare to Seinfeld's Bubble Boy?

Of course not. Americans are creative moochers, especially nowadays. We lack creativity as it is, given the tons of crap out there. To attempt to make up for it, we just leech onto what others are doing and copy them. We're useless.

Oh, dear, this will be showing up on American TV next like all the other shows that we have copied from the Brits (i.e. All in the Family, Sanford & Son, Three's Company, Who wants to be a millionaire, Weakest Link, Survivor, American Idol,or Pop Idol as it was called there ) and the list goes on. Aren't we capable of having any original ideas of our own ?

I had more faith in the British to not make this kind of television. It's disappointing. Wouldn't have been shocked if Fox or UPN did it.

I think a better contest would be to challenge a band to make an album that doesn't sound like the cookie cutter crap that's out there now! Don't worry about putting a band in a bubbleor some kind of cliche reality show setting. Get a band to make some REAL music.

This was done in Australia last year. Regurgitator (An Australian electronic / guitar band) spent a month in a big glass structure in Federation Square, Melbourne. Highlites were broadcast on a cable music channel, Channel V.

Probably the best bit was when a couple of drunk guys broke in one night and got chased out by the band.

The album released wasn't all that bad as well.
