The Five: Characters I'd like to see return

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 17th 2006 9:39AM
Gloria ReubenWith Rob Lowe returning to The West Wing next week (a truly great development I never thought would happen), it got me thinking: what characters from the past would I like to see come back on other shows? Here are my five:
  • Will Tippin (Alias): Yeah, I know, he actually is coming back, but that doesn't mean I can't list him. It would have been good to see him more than a couple of times the past three years.
  • Stephen Colbert (The Daily Show): Sure I enjoy The Colbert Report, but I miss his segments on The Daily Show. Nobody does This Week In God like he did.
  • Any of the old ER cast: Carol, Doug, Benton, Jeanie, Susan. Hell, do a real soap opera thing and have Dr. Greene come back from the dead. Wouldn't that be wild? (And if Noah Wyle is going to do guest spots, can you at least bring him to the hospital?)
  • Elliott (Will and Grace): What, did Jack forget about the fact that he had a kid? If he's not back for the finale, that would be lame.
  • Andy Richter (Late Night With Conan O'Brien): There's just so much O'Brien mugging I can take, and it wasn't half as annoying when he had Richter to play off of.

BOONE AND SHANNON! (OR EVEN ARNTZ!)

Can I say that now in retrospect that I completely disagree with the killing off of the characters on Lost. It makes no sense and really seems pointless.

In time, it has only been weeks since both characters died and the group seems to have forgotten them already.

I really think Shannon could have continued to shake up the island if they hadn't made her so nice. The island really needs a bitchy character besides Locke.

I wouldn't mind seeing Carter back, but I agree with the others that it would have to be with Kem and it should involve a brief story family line for them.

I used to be a fan of Abby and Carter, but I have to be honest and admit that Kem had more chemistry with Carter than Abby ever did.

I dont think that Carter and Kem should appear in every episode, but it would be nice to see a couple that genuinely seems in love with each other and with the idea of raising a family together.

I really want to see Carter at county. However, I don't ever want to see Kem again. While I like Abby, I can't stand the pairing of Luka and Abby.

I love Maura Tierney and would probably watch her in turn watching paint dry but this year I just gave up on ER entirely. The traumas just aren't exciting anymore, the other characters are un-engaging - Luka has always been a poor Doug Ross replacement. Maura herself was always just a Julianna Margulies replacement, to me at least she was Maura so I could put up with the dull character.

I would love to see Carter back at County General, but only if he and Kem showed up.

In fact, I would prefer seeing them have the baby plot and family life together instead of what we're getting with Luka and Abby.

It's molto boring, and although I think Tierney has good comedic timing, she is leaving me cold and indifferent when it comes to her dramatic acting skills.

I really don't see the mother in her at all.

Somehow, I dont feel that Im alone on this point.

I agree about bringing some of the old cast members back to ER, but hopefully that will only happen when the show signs off.

Although I'd love to see Newton work again with Wyle (i.e., Carter and Kem), especially after her success in BP Oscar Winner Crash, I don't know if ER is good enough anymore for them to appear on.

The Abby/Luka stuff is boring, in part due to the limited emotional response of the actors in those roles, and I've read that their stint as the leads of the show have brought on the worst ratings decline in ER's history.

The other characters/performers simply aren't as compelling as the ones who appeared on ER in the past.

If the show insists on keeping the current cast (I don't think that Stamos - especially considering his string of recent failures - is going to do much for ER), then I don't see the point in any of the original cast members coming back.

Although I love the Colbert Report I sometimes worry that it'll wear thin and that the Daily Show misses him too much. Personally I like the idea of expanding The Daily Show to say an hour and just giving Colbert and expanded segment, ala Back in Black but let him do all his regular Report stuff but this would also allow him to do his traditional Daily Show segments and involve the other Daily Show crew if needs be.
