The Sopranos: Live Free or Die
(S06E06) And to think that I was worried that the whole Vito plotline would be left out in the cold for too long. As it turns out, it came right back into play this week, with the word from Sal and the boys after seeing Vito in the gay bar making the rounds and back to Christopher, at his addict's meeting, no less. (Did anyone else find it comical that the guys went outside to smoke a cigarette to decompress from talking about drug addiction?) Chris quicky relays the story to the guys back at the Bing, and his sponsor clearly was finding this whole thing way too amusing, because he was mighty full of jokes.
Instead of "Live Free or Die," we could have titled this episode "Family Problems" because they were all over the place. Tony's got issues with the "family," Carmela and her fam are getting into it over the building materials on her spec house (and the missing bundt cake pan, apparently), Vito's wife and Phil Leotardo - Vito's wife's cousin - are discussing Vito a bit, and the word is out that they are now "separated."
Yet again, we had a few killer quotes, from Christopher asking Tony if he would have to "see the guy take it in the ass" before believing that he could be gay to Vito complaining to his girlfriend that he didn't couldn't have sex with her all this time because of his weight loss and "the blood sugar." Riiiiiight.
All in all, everything feels like it's "settling back in" to the way it was. Carm is kinda pissed at Tony for not calling the building inspector - again - while she's very much into making some business for herself. You know, like the chop shop that has apparently showed up in place of the body shop, or so it seems. I've also gotta say that Benny Fazio becoming a big part of the show is not only amusing, as he's a good character, but his being played by Max Casella of Doogie Howser, M.D. fame is almost too much to handle. And based on the previews, looks like he's going to be part of the story going forward. Well, at least for one episode.
I had a few friends and colleagues telling me I was nuts after I had heard that Vito would be in at least one more episode. Turns out that not only was I right on about that, but he might stay around a little longer. In fact, he might not vanish as well if he can get an antiques business off the ground. Tony wasn't kidding when he was praising the man's business skills, and with the fact that he's a "natural" as relayed by the antique shop owner up in New Hampshire, there might be something coming for him in the near future as far as that biz goes. Heck, he can't afford to stay in a $140/night bed & breakfast forever, right?
Silvio's talk with Tony at the end of this week's show was great, especially when he mentioned how guys "like Paulie" might skim off a little money here and there but you "look the other way," but that this wouldn't work if Vito were around doing the same thing. Whether that means we get some hunters out there after Vito or not isn't clear, obviously, but even Tony's good side isn't that good when it comes to the business. And Paulie's inkling that he's going to make some cash off of the Barone carting company has got to step back into the plot sometime soon. If that were to happen, it'd be the second time that something had come in between his beliefs about his guys in a very short time, and that wouldn't be a good thing. If there's anything good about the fact that we know this show is coming to an end in the next year, it's that we won't have things pushed off forever and ever, because closure is a good thing, and this show hasn't been one to disappoint over the long haul.
