The Sopranos: Live Free or Die

Sopranos Live Free or Die
(S06E06) And to think that I was worried that the whole Vito plotline would be left out in the cold for too long. As it turns out, it came right back into play this week, with the word from Sal and the boys after seeing Vito in the gay bar making the rounds and back to Christopher, at his addict's meeting, no less. (Did anyone else find it comical that the guys went outside to smoke a cigarette to decompress from talking about drug addiction?) Chris quicky relays the story to the guys back at the Bing, and his sponsor clearly was finding this whole thing way too amusing, because he was mighty full of jokes.

Instead of "Live Free or Die," we could have titled this episode "Family Problems" because they were all over the place. Tony's got issues with the "family," Carmela and her fam are getting into it over the building materials on her spec house (and the missing bundt cake pan, apparently), Vito's wife and Phil Leotardo - Vito's wife's cousin - are discussing Vito a bit, and the word is out that they are now "separated."
Yet again, we had a few killer quotes, from Christopher asking Tony if he would have to "see the guy take it in the ass" before believing that he could be gay to Vito complaining to his girlfriend that he didn't couldn't have sex with her all this time because of his weight loss and "the blood sugar." Riiiiiight.

All in all, everything feels like it's "settling back in" to the way it was. Carm is kinda pissed at Tony for not calling the building inspector - again - while she's very much into making some business for herself. You know, like the chop shop that has apparently showed up in place of the body shop, or so it seems. I've also gotta say that Benny Fazio becoming a big part of the show is not only amusing, as he's a good character, but his being played by Max Casella of Doogie Howser, M.D. fame is almost too much to handle. And based on the previews, looks like he's going to be part of the story going forward. Well, at least for one episode.

I had a few friends and colleagues telling me I was nuts after I had heard that Vito would be in at least one more episode. Turns out that not only was I right on about that, but he might stay around a little longer. In fact, he might not vanish as well if he can get an antiques business off the ground. Tony wasn't kidding when he was praising the man's business skills, and with the fact that he's a "natural" as relayed by the antique shop owner up in New Hampshire, there might be something coming for him in the near future as far as that biz goes. Heck, he can't afford to stay in a $140/night bed & breakfast forever, right?

Silvio's talk with Tony at the end of this week's show was great, especially when he mentioned how guys "like Paulie" might skim off a little money here and there but you "look the other way," but that this wouldn't work if Vito were around doing the same thing. Whether that means we get some hunters out there after Vito or not isn't clear, obviously, but even Tony's good side isn't that good when it comes to the business. And Paulie's inkling that he's going to make some cash off of the Barone carting company has got to step back into the plot sometime soon. If that were to happen, it'd be the second time that something had come in between his beliefs about his guys in a very short time, and that wouldn't be a good thing. If there's anything good about the fact that we know this show is coming to an end in the next year, it's that we won't have things pushed off forever and ever, because closure is a good thing, and this show hasn't been one to disappoint over the long haul.

Collin Finnerty is the Duke player accused of rape? Hmmmmmm, ya think he's Kevin Finnerty's son? LOL

And, lately there has been a lot of specualtion that Carm, Meadow, Roslaie or Angie will take a bigger role in the "business." Most of these comments have been shot down by people saying a woman could never lead a mob family. Need I remind you of the femal mob boss Tony visited in Naples?? Remember, she (and other women) took over because their mobster men were all either dead or doing hard time. I wouldn't count out the Sopranettes just yet.

This episode was GREAT. The best ones are when the plot stays focused with only minor diversions to set up future espisodes. I also like it when it is about the mob, and not AJ, Uncle Junior's diet, or other nonsense.

Bringing Angie into it is great. A female wiseguy. Love it.

I think the Muslims angle is that Tony will turn in the Muslims they are working with to get himself off a hook. They may or may not be actually terrorists (or people raising money for terror). Adriana gave us a clue when she said that he (forgot his name) was "very religious". There's a twist here where the FBI gets different priorities from the top, or it depends on the agent you're working with department. The Wire on HBO has already played this angle well.

Although not terribly relevant to this thread, I nevertheless hope that some of you have taken note of a player from Duke University that was arrested for alleged rape yesterday: Collin Finnerty. Yikes. For its undertones of gender, class, and race, this is a story line worthy of a Sopranos episode. Lacrosse, though?

The Sopranos is THE best show on television, one goes into withdrawals when it is "in remission". i live for Sunday nights, i watch the reruns because i always see things i didnt see the first time. Criminal Minds is a good show and so is Thief. and of course, CSI Las Vegas is still a strong show as is CSI Miami, New York. but over all, the Sopranos is unbeatable. i see Tony getting stronger every episode, someone is going to pay for ticking him off! one more thing..James Gandolfini needs to lose that belly weight, i am fearful for him as a person, he can die of a heart attack so easy! get with it, Jim, lose the fat..you are in grave danger.

Did anybody notice Phil L.'s number on Vito's phone when he called while Vito was leaving town smearing greasy ribs on his pants? I called the number and it went straight to voicemail. Here it is for those who don't have tivo or on demand. 347-387-5424

when they said Angie (Big Pussy's wife) had money on the street, what does that mean? She's loan sharking?

Thanks BobbyBuz,

You are right I didn't even notice a TV in that scene with the hot babysitter. She was watching V.Mars and Vito didn't even notice her.

I just want to know which one of Tony's crew told Phil about the security guard incident. Tony said that what was said was to stay in these four walls and then a couple of scenes later Phil tells his cousin (Vito's wife) that he heard from the grapevine about the incident. So either someone in Tony's crew is talking to Phil, Tony told Phil or the writers fudged up.

The Sopranos is one of the only shows I find worth watching.

Chris seems to get the best lines; this week was Tony suspecting a couple of guys being terrorists and Chris' response was mentioning how one of them has a Springer Spaniel...

It's safe to assume Tony's 'every day is a gift' is one of his many phases (remember Sun Tzu? Buddhism?). The opening scene by the pool, his frustration with the noisy AC assured you he was back in business.

Anyone think Chris' AA sponsor is shaping up to become the new Bada-Bing whipping boy (replacing Georgey).

And don't think the Uncle Junior situation will just die down, there will be closure. For anyone who is really interested, watch the Season trailer and you'll see what happens.
