Scrubs: His Story III

by Chris Thilk, posted Apr 18th 2006 10:22PM
scrubs cast(S05E19) J.D. is locked in a water tank for most of this episode, but not before he passes on the gift of voiceover narration to The Janitor.

One of the major - and funniest - plots of the episode is Dr. Cox's constant questioning of just how hip and funky Turk is. Mediocre basketball skills, a group of hopelessly unhip friends and a host of other characteristics all combine to have Cox remind Turk over and over again that he is not cool. This is not helped by the fact that Carla is in full baby-prep mode. That includes buying a mini-van and buying a Baby Bjorn.

A lot of the episode involves The Janitor talking to a patient and helping out with another. This makes him feel useful and such, a feeling that is quickly disspelled when he overhears a couple of the doctors talking and saying he's essentially useless. As usual, though, his interactions with other people are alternately self-serving, lying and weird admissions such as having a sixth sense about squirrels feeling fear.

Elliot, meanwhile, is feeling like she needs to be tougher with her interns. They're covering for one another when someone screws up and she feels like she needs to find out who committed the smallest of infractions. She's all ready to really chew someone out when Cox reminds her that loyalty and covering for friends is something she benefitted from herself. As a young intern, Carla swept quite a few of Elliot's mistakes under the rug and, when she realizes that, she decides to stand down a bit.

It was a good episode but a little...what's the word I'm looking for...thin. Good writing, a solid performance from everyone, but just not very meaty. My favorite bits include the mural J.D. and Turk paint on the baby's nursery wall (Optimus Prime vs Megatron), Turk's hooded sweatshirt look in the mini-van and The Janitor telling Kelso it's 3:30 when it's actually 4:15. For some reason that just killed me.

i enjoyed the timing and kind of muted poignancy of last night's episode, it dealt with race and stigmas and being needed while serving your same old self and was funny... all without 500 tons of extra drama. i love my Scrubs with the extra drama, don't get me wrong, but His Story III was refreshing in the middle of a season where the episodes have been enjoyable over all, but a bit too formulaic

Scrubs does not dance around race the way this review did.

Turk said that being black made him automatically cool. So by showing how un-black he was, Dr. Cox was also showing Turk how uncool he was. Black and cool are not always the same thing (see Urkel) but in this episode Turk used his blackness as proof of his coolness.

My two favorite parts of last night's episode:
1. Knock Knock
Who's There?
Nurse Mophead
Nurse Mophead who?
You have a mophead.

2. Dr. Cox imitating Elliot's "angry walk"

No, no, no, no. Questioning how black and hip and cool Turk is two different things. I love how this show deals with race. It doesn't dance around the issue and it doesn't sugar coat things. Turk is black, it's no big deal and it's very refreshing in this politically correct world. Dr. Cox's speech was about the NAACP, Turks white friends, how good he imitate white people, etc. Then in the parking lot Dr. Cox also made fun of Turks' ability to play basketball as a black man. Again in the parking lot, Turk tried to prove his blackness by ideas for pimping out his ride with 22" in rims. So no, it wasn't about being hip and cool but about being black. If the show isn't going to dance around the issue, I don't think reviews or commentary should dance around the issue either.

questioning how black Turk is, is the same as questioning how hip/cool he is.

Funny, I thought Dr. Cox was questioning how black Turk was. Not how hip and cool.
