The show killer known as American Idol

Juggernaut
American IdolAOL Television news has an interesting story by USA Today reporter Gary Levin on the impact American Idol has on other shows that share its time slot. The summary:  Idol grabs huge numbers (nearly 30 million viewers) while the other shows struggle.

Case in point, The ABC sitcoms According to Jim and Hope & Faith (which I didn't realize was still on the schedule) are earning their lowest numbers ever. NBC's Joey lasted all of one week on the Tuesday night schedule before being removed. The Idol effect is also hurting Wednesday night show's as well, especially the juggernaut known as Lost. Since the Idol result show began in late February the ABC show has lost almost 20% of its audience.

But the news is not all bad. The CBS shows NCIS and Criminal Minds are faring better against Idol, mostly due to their base of older viewers and young men. Whether they can hold on to that audience as the competition nears its end is another matter entirely.

Lost has fewer viewers because it SUCKS. Shocker but the writing has been dragging like crazy and that's why people have abandoned the show. Idol has nothing to do with it.

I would have to say that the reason Lost's numbers are down is primarilly because ABC thinks its a good idea to air 1 new episode then 3 repeats again and again ...

this leads people to give up on the show (at least on TV) and simply wait for the DVDs to come out

The networks' greed is what is going to kill these shows not idiotic shows like American Idol

Who cares what's on at any given time? Get a DVR and create your own schedule. Join the 21st century, people. Even if you don't have a DVR, you can download (either legally or not) Lost and watch it at your leisure. Heck, Wednesday night's results show is all filler anyway; switch away from Lost at 9:29 for 10 seconds to see who was eliminated.
