Veronica Mars: Nevermind the Buttocks

by Keith McDuffee, posted Apr 18th 2006 10:54PM
veronica mars(S02E19) The writers for this show really know how to throw us through enough twists and turns to keep us guessing until the very end. I'm not sure there were nearly this many goings on last season, though as many commenters have pointed out, the likely scenario is that someone we least expect or know about is behind much of what's been going down.

So let's quickly go through what we know from this episode...

Gia Goodman says she saw the green Barracuda speeding by the limo just before the crash. Likely it was Liam Fitzpatrick driving the car, though we don't know that. Also, we know Gia was facing out the passenger side of the limo, since that's the side of the Barracuda the leprechan decal was on (whether that's significant or not, who knows).

We also now know that Kendall/Priscilla Banks has a thing with Liam, which puts together a very convenient connection regarding the crash, though would Liam really want to kill Servando so badly as to get the entire bus to crash? Kendall also has a connection to Liam's brother, as they most likely pulled a long con together. No doubt Kendall's marriage to Casablancas is one of those cons, and we're seeing part of it play out right now.

Another thing we saw in this episode is that the school just so happens to have a supply of rats around for feeding a snake, so there's a good chance the person responsible for the dead rat in the bus got it from the school (though, of course, one can get one of those rats anywhere).

We also caught a quick mention of the Mayor calling to see where his daughter was, which sure felt like a red herring to me, though it could very well be yet another clue to lead us to what I've thought all along, that Woody's behind the whole thing.

That was a great scene with Keith inside Kendall's house, though I have to say I feel very misled by what Veronica said to Keith over the phone. When Liam tells Kendall to hand him his gun, Veronica makes the call to Keith, saying she's "pretty sure someone's going to get shot." Later we learn Veronica took the bullets from the gun. While it was shocking to see nothing exit the gun when Liam pulled the trigger, I later felt it was a cheap blow to the viewers. It's a rare occurrence on this show, but there you have it.

Weevil kicks ass, and he's definitely a character I look forward to seeing on this show every week. I do have to wonder how they'll work him into next season after graduation. Then again, sadly, we don't know if he's contracted to be around next year as it is.

Logan was sadly misrepresented this week. I guess he can't be so prominent in every episode though, can he?

And what of Duncan's hair being on the murder weapon, which seems now to be an Oscar statue? I'm sure that'll come up soon in the court case against Echolls.

Quote of the episode:
"I hate fake deer, too. Everytime I see their stupid fake deer faces I wanna grab a shotgun and go all Cheney on 'em."

I don't see how ya'll could possibly think the bullets thing was a low blow to the viewers. If so you should watch that segment again. Veronica had no idea Keith was in the home. Vito is also right in that if Liam needed a gun someone would probably get shot (maybe the guy had ammo on him or in the house). So she called her dad and told him (paraphrasing here) that she thinks someone would get shot. His response? Where are you? When she told him he realized it was the same house he was in at that moment. So he told her to pull up so he would have an easy get away, that's when she realized he was in the house, and tried to explain about the bullets. Keith never gave her a chance to explain since he hung up when he heard someone coming into the house. If you watch it again it makes perfect sense.

As far as Jason Dohring goes, count me as someone who thinks he's pretty mediocre too. He's hardly any better than whoever plays Duncan. Both have basically one or two good expressions and that's it. Logan always has that pained stare into space look, and frankly it gets old.

I reckon Aaron Echols may not have killed lizzy, but he did want to protect those tapes. Anyway he tried to kill Veronica so why would he try to get off on this murder , he would still have attempted murder charge.

I must say I am a Logan fan also, he is great in this role. He is arrogant and to the right degree.

Darius -- I still think we were cheated with the gun/bullets thing. Veronica later told her father that she would have told him that the gun had no bullets if he hadn't hung up on her. So, would she have said she'd tell him that with any fear that the gun might still be loaded?

OK SO MAYBE I WAS WORNG!

Ok so maybe Dick isn't gay and maybe Woody isn't doing the whole Catholic Preist thing to the little boys on his baseball teams? Or maybe they are, only time will tell! But I wanted to mention that The whole thing that V Mars said about "someone getting shot" was not a low blow to the viewers. Yes we find out that she did remove the bullets a day earlier but how was she to know if he had reloaded the gun and is that a gamble she was willing to make? So it was V Mars just being more safe than sorry!

Now what is the real deal with Kendall/Priscilla? And what will all of this ahve to do with Beaver Casablancas?

Also am I the only person that totally forgot that Thumper was killed in stadium explosion? After watching the dream episode a week ago I had totally forgot that Thumper was dead (and he was really cute).
There are way to many angles for V Mars right now!

And on a final note in case you guys have not noticed, I am black. And I really feel like the show is handling some racial and class things very well!

There was the scene where one of the PCH'ers came to Weevile to get him back so he can help them, and how it gult him into it he said "People are gonna die, your people". I must say when you are a minority in America people of your same race never become "Your People" until they need something from you! In Weevil's case where were "His People" when Thumper was beating his ass and black mailing him!

in response to Khamel's comments about Jason Dohring - I felt the same way about Nick Cage...how did he EVER get on the big screen? I guess it's "the eye of the beholder" thing.

So much new stuff to digest in this episode! I have to admit the Kendall/Liam insurance-angle bombing makes somewhat more compelling sense than the Woody Goodman cover-up-pedophilia bombing. But learning that Kendall *doesn't* actually require domestic staff to make her own cereal gives an interesting new tint to her conversation with Cassidy in the elevator a few episodes back, when she claims she could turn the con on him and he laughs at her. Cassidy may be in for more trouble than he ever imagined.

As for Jason Dohring, the actor who plays Logan? Well, Khamel, you're certainly welcome to your own opinion, but there's a universe of fans who not only would not agree with you but wouldn't even begin to understand the premise for your opinion. Logan/Jason steals every scene he's in, I think, and his chemistry with Veronica/Kristin is beyond description. I watched Season 1 in about a week of DVD gorging, and went from "what an asshole" to "dear lord, I think I'm in love" between disk 1 and disk 3, with the culmination being disk 5. Logan's complexity never fails to amaze me, and Dohring's artistry in making those layers clear...it's some of the best work I've seen on TV.

But, of course, your mileage may vary.

In the earlier episode where Kendall went to see Aaron in the slammer, she discussed w/ Cassidy that the Kane house was for sale and she wanted to buy it.

Do we know whether they did buy the Kane house? It would make it easier for Kendall to plant the fake murder weapon there, and make it easier for Keith/Veronica to figure out it was Kendall who did the planting. if that's how it all went down.

Anyway, where exactly did this oscar come from? Didn't the PCHers burn down the Echols house? questions, questions, questions...

So, if Kendall marrying Casablancas was a long con, then what did she have to gain with her relationship with Logan?

Questions, questions questions :)

In response to Khamel:
I think that Jason Dohring has made Logan into an unforgettable character. He and Rob Thomas have added so many layers to Logan since the pilot it's hard to believe that back then he was just the "obligatory psychotic jackass" of Neptune high. He gets some of the best lines on the show, and he delivers them so smoothly and so full of snark I can't help but smile whenever I see him on the screen. He also can't seem to catch a break, and it's an attribute to Jason's acting that he can subtley and sometimes not so subtley portray the pain this guy has been through. Add that he has got acting chemistry with pretty much anyone you put him in a scene with and you can help but want to see more of the guy. I have never thought of Jason's acting as awkward or annoying. I mean, early in season one he was supposed to come off as an ass...but then you find out more and more about his character and you start to realize that the guy's got reasons for the way he acts. Oh, and I dont thing I've ever seen the words (VMs)Logan and Boring in the same sentence before. That's my opinion on the subject

I have a question: Am I the only one who finds it odd that Aaron Ecchols has won an Oscar? He seems to me to be a Bruce Willis/Tom Cruise type, only making big-budget action movies for profit. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. It just seemed kind of funny to me.
