Numb3rs: Guns and Roses
(S02E20) This episode
was kind of different. I don't think they've had a case before where Don had a personal/romantic connection to
those involved. I'll say this though. I didn't like how they kept pushing the idea that working in any kind of law
enforcement (police, FBI, ATF, etc.) is so stressful that suicide is an option for many. I realize a job like that can
have it's pressures, but I was surprised that this show took that angle. The unfortunate thing is that there's probably
some truth to it so I suppose I'm just eating my own words right there.
Beyond that gripe, this was a very good episode as usual. There really is no reason why this show couldn't pull it's weight on a night other than Friday. It's better than The Unit and would make a nice pairing with NCIS. But I digress. A former love interest of Don's (she was an ATF agent) commits suicide. But after some crazy mathematical analysis from Charlie, it seems like it may have been a murder.
Can we talk about that mathematical analysis for starters? I completely understand the gunshot fingerprint stuff and using the soundwaves created to determine that someone else was in the room. I'm not so sure that I understand the quantification of events in someone's life and using the resulting score to determine if they're a candidate for suicide. I know they explained it and all, but it still seems far fetched to me. How can you honestly say whether or not someone is capable of killing themselves? Oh well.
I like how the episode addressed the issues of relationships in Don and Charlie's lives. They're both so invested in their work but it looks like Charlie may be advancing to something with Amita and we left Don as he stepped inside the house of the local ADA. So maybe they both have the right idea.
One thing that bugged me was the promo ad pumping up the final four episodes until the Numb3rs season finale. There hasn't been any serious ongoing storyline, so what the heck are they going to do for a finale? There's nothing to really wrap up... I don't see how it can be anything other than a regular episode with a (cheesy?) cliffhanger. I hope they come up with something.
