Wonder Showzen: Justice

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 22nd 2006 12:26PM

wonder showzen(S02E04) Last night's episode mostly took place in the 18th century, with Chauncey taking on the role of the master of a plantation and his fellow puppets all serving as his slaves. Things start to get out of hand, however, when Him becomes a cyborg slave, able to bale hay, whitewash a barn, and whip other slaves with greater efficiency. Chauncey loves his new robotic slave, but when his young Southern bride puts the moves on Him, the new robo-slave is charged with rape. In a hilarious court room sequence, Sthugar, the young bride, blatantly admits she was lying about the rape, but they continue with the trial anyway. This became the main part of the episode, and one of the funniest, most absurd takes on race relations in the United States I've ever seen. A monkey who evolves into itself with a hat made of licorice, Chauncey having sex with the Bible, and a visit from God in the form of a banana were just a few of the things that popped up during the hearing.

The "Beat Kids" segment with Trevor making pharmacists uncomfortable by asking if he could sample the "candy," and why all the hobos keep digging out of the dumpster in the back was pretty funny, as was Clarence's "on the street" segment where he asked people their opinions on the issue without actually saying what the issue was. Both of these segments really require several elements to work well, and while the Clarence segment was good, there wasn't enough people going ballistic and trying to kill the puppet, which is really what makes those segments so much fun to watch.

The "Wonder Showzen Premies" Muppet Babies spoof, which showed infantile versions of the main characters dismembering each other on purpose to see what it's like on the "other side" was rather sick, but it's not really an episode of Wonder Showzen without copious amounts of spilled blood, preferably of the innocent.

Best line: "If Jesus had an edible beard, he would never have starved to death way up in that banana tree -- of the mind."

And didn't they use the scariest looking monkey ever?

"I will keep the God banana at my house, where he'll sleep on my couch!"

The news anchor/judge was cracking me up this week. Much better ep than last... the Muppet Babies takeoff was genius, especially what Him saw when he went to the afterlife.

This was the best episode of Wonder Showzen to date, IMO.
