Starbuck reveals Battlestar Galactica secrets for next season

by Richard Keller, posted Apr 23rd 2006 10:30AM

Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar GalacticaWhen you see Lt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica this fall you'll notice a few things. First, her hair will be very, very short. Second, she will not be with the same man she was with at the end of last season.

This is according to Katee Sackhoff, who portrays Starbuck on the very popular Sci-Fi Channel series. In an interview on Zap2it.com, Sackhoff reveals that she will go through some very tough times in the first four episodes of the new season. By the fifth episode she will recommit herself to her military career and sport a nifty crew cut to go along with her new attitude.

Starbuck will also have a new love interest other than the man who she married during the second season finale. It's unsure if Samuel T. Anders (Michael Trucco) dies of the pneumonia he suffers during the finale, or while he resists the Cylon occupation.

Production on the third season of Battlestar Galactica began on April 10 and will continue until December, with the Sci-Fi Channel premiere in October.

Battlestar Wiki, the Wikipedia site for all things BSG, has collected a lot of known pivotal plot points for Season 3 (including the importance of Starbuck's missing ovaries) in one location. I'm surprised by the level of detail and specificity. Check it out:

Also, a revealing interview with David Eick is supposed to be published in the next week or so in Ask Ausiello, the TV Guide column. (At least that's what Ausiello said two weeks ago.)

Now that would really be interesting, considering the flac that Helo and the Gorgeous Sharon took for their romance. IF this were to come to pass (Starbuck/Leobon), at least we could not accuse Starbuck of being hypocritical because she was at least somewhat tolerant of Sharon and helo's relationship.

James Callis, in his interview on SciFi website, says that Leobon the cyclon wants to pursue a relationship with Starbuck and at least initially she resists. Given that option, I would rather she hook up with Gaius Baltar, though I suspect Six has designs on him now.

I think she will hook up with Gaius, which will give her access to a "military" position in the government that is cooperating with the Cylon occupation. Like somone said, they are running the risk of turning her into a whore, so it may make more sense for her to have a relationship with someone she has experience with. Since Lee is on the run, Gaius is the only logical option.

If Katie has been at odds with the writers ( and I say if...) then I would tend to agree with her judgment on the direction her character is going. Let's face it, the writers have been going off the deep end a bit during the past few episodes have they not? I admire how the writers embrace bold and "cold water in your face" plot twists. I like this as long as it keeps the story coheshive, logical, and pertinet to the "battlestar Galactica" canon. But bold shock and change just for the sake of it without a logical continuity is dangerous to the entertainment value. It is also the small things that can add or detract from good plot themes. Let's take for example, one of Katies gripes on her charactor treatment (spoiler alert!). She is supposed to bed and lovefast another man yet again! She would not say who but according to her we will probably not like the pairing. She did not spell it out in the interview but I believe she (rightly) is tired of her charactor being the bicycle of the fleet. How is her charactor to be taken seriously with this kind of writing. I have heard that the first four or five episodes of season three will be the planet/resistence storyline and then back in space they go. I just hope, like any other good employer, the writers will listen and hearken to the suggestions and opinions of their employees...in this case, the stars of the show. Having mentioned all this, This is still my favorite show as long as Grace Park is in it.

New episodes in October? Sci-Fi normally has new seasons in January and July...was this strategy not working out for them, or is Galactica moving from Friday night?

This article and other things I have read elsewhere all indicate that Kara Thrice is going to go through some tough times in first four episodes of Season 3. One thing I guessed was that Leobon the cyclon is back to interrogate/torture Kara the way she did to him. (Remember he said the interrogation had happened before and would happen again, and sometimes the roles of the torturer and tortured are reversed?) Now we learn that something will happen to Anders as well, and Kara will end up in the arms of someone else (a coupling that Sackhoff seems to indicate the fan base will hate).

Katie sounds like she has been fighting some battles over her character with the writers and producers, and she feels that she has essentially lost, and she is being forced to go in directions that she is not entirely comfortable with. That could be why she is grousing and spilling the beans on next season. That's my sense, anyway. I hope I'm wrong, because I would hate to think Sackhoff is unhappy with what she is doing on the show. Next to Adama and Roslin, hers is the most instrumental character on the show, and I would hate to think there is any kind of trouble on the set.

Seems like those who bemoaned Starbuck's appearance and demeanor in the season finale were too quick to lose faith in Kara Thrace. I can't wait to see Katee's performance in those first few episodes, because it should be quite good.
