Her lawyer is pretty good. He's represented a number of people you might have heard of, one of whom was even the Premier of British Columbia. You can look him up if you want, his name is Steve Barta and he's pretty well-known in Honolulu.

Why does everyone think she is being selfish by deciding jail over community service?

Do you think she would get any work done with the fans and paparazzi all over her? If she was sent to a school to talk about the dangers of drunk driving it would be an incredibly disruptive day for all involved. I think she's making the smart choice for all parties.

I'm still debating whether or not she will be killed off this season. I think it would be too obvious if she did, but the producers/writers might be getting flack from above.

As a prosecutor, I respect her willingness to own up to her act, unlike, say, DIANA ROSS, for instance. It's really the best option for her, considering what all the community service hours would do to her work schedule. But I wonder if she'll help form an army in there...

She's scary as hell. But if she's not the community service type which clearly she isn't, 5 days in jail and a bad gal reputation beats 30 days of community service.

To some extent her bad rep will serve her career in bad gal roles, but she'll have a tough time trying to get rid of that image later on. Plus, who'll hire her if she's too much trouble?!

i like it. She's got a rough reputation already, might as well embrace it. And timewise it makes nothing but sense. 6 weeks vs. 5 days, it will be less difficult to schedule around for work, and her time out of jail is much more valuable than to spend it in community service, regardless of how easy it is.

Unfortunately, it doesn't make Lost any better of a show.

With any half decent lawyer, she could have negotiated spending that 240 hours of community service talking to school kids about alcohol absue or working in a rehab center. She would have wound up making herself look good that way and salvaged this mess. as far as he career is concerned, she's made a foolish choice.

Makes sense to me. It's hardly likely to be a heavy duty "get traded around for sex for a pack of cigarettes" facility and it's five days straight up instead of the equivalent of ten days spread around a working schedule. Hard to argue against it when you're shooting a show and not living in Hawaii when you aren't working on the show.

If it is anything like Texas, you show up at your
appointed time and find out how much it costs
them. You pay it and you are out. No jailtime,
no community service, nothing. The conviction will
stand. Whatever, for a girl like her, not much.
