Gay playwright upset with Leno

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 26th 2006 8:22PM

jeff whittyJeff Whitty, a gay playwright whose show Avenue Q is currently on Broadway, has some issues with the way Jay Leno depicts gays on his program, and how he uses gay stereotypes on his show. He penned an open letter to the late night comedian, which you can read here. Now, I don't watch Leno much anymore, but if he does rely on gay stereotypes on his show I would opine that is has more to do with lazy comedy writing than any kind of malicious intent. Of course, one could argue that the means don't justify the end, and Whitty clearly feels that way, pointing out in his letter that gays aren't all Richard Simmons types who dress in leather, and many of them still face prejudice. So what do you guys think? Is Leno a closet homophobe or just some guy who tells crappy, easy jokes?

Thanks to zack, who mentioned the letter here.

Not agreeing with homosexuality even though you know it's not a choice is like not agreeing with brunettes. It doesn't make any sense. If you would say you choose to use the bible to decide what's right any wrong that I can understand. Many people do that. That is a choice I don't agree with.

To joe:

Glad you understand my view point... I understand and respect yours as well. I challange you to pick up 'The Case For Christ.' I'm not trying to "un-gay" you... simply challanging you (like I challanged myself) to understand just *why* the Bible is so important, and why it *can* be trusted.

Feel free to contact me at any time. landon -dot- howell -at- yahoo -dot- com

To Jason:

Neither of us are Biblical scholars, but there's one thign you failed to mention. The verses you quoted are from the Old Testament... meaning that they are rules which preceeded the first coming of Christ. When Christ came God stayed the same God, he simply implemented new rules... actually, it was more like adding a few extra, and abolishing other dumb rules (like eating with your hands).

And yes, Jesus did not say anything about homosexuality... but God did. And (as I hope you would know seeing as you imply to have read the Bible) Jesus Christ is God in human form... and *this* is what God said:

Lev. 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"

1 Cor. 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

Rom. 1:26-28, "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper."

Landon,

There are about a hundred other "rules" the Bible lists as immoral that I could list off to you that I have serious doubts you would take the time to defend right now, much less practice in your own daily life. You're obviously, like many other supposed "Christians", focusing on a couple of passages in the Old Testament - nevermind that Jesus Christ (remember him? that guy "Christianity" was named after?) never said a single thing about homosexuality.

Get back to me when you you decide to sell your daughter into slavery (Exodus 21:7), buy some slaves (Lev. 25:44), stop getting haircuts (Lev.19:27), and start killing your neighbors for working on Sunday (Exodus 35:2), and then we can talk about your own following the letter of the Bible.

"Um... NO. If finding gay people disgusting were an "instincitve" response, then gay people would vomit everytime they see a hetero couple kiss. Sorry, but your disgust is a learned behaviour. Thank your parents for me."

My parents have had no influence on my attitude towards homosexuality whatsoever. (that attitude would be tolerance, BTW)
It is instinctive for someone to be repulsed by something which they really wouldn't like to do themself. Regardless of the origins of their feelings, (may they be born with it or taught it) they don't want to do it and will probably find the idea and the image of it repulsive. That is a healthy instinct.
I don't know how gay people react to heterosexual images. I don't care. They're the ones with the fault.

Anyone got any gay jokes..?

hey landon,

thanks for your lengthy and detailed response - i guess it outlines the basic conflict between our camps: i will always feel it is my given right to pursue happiness in the orientation i've been genetically disposed to, and you will always feel that, while i have that right, i am acting against god's law.

should i jump into the darwinism bit? eh, why not! screw jay leno!

ok so, darwinism - that's a whole other conversation. i don't understand your logic that because it may or may not be a recessive gene, it 'doesn't exist.' recessive genes are only 'killed off' when they are selected, i.e. when something happens to specifically kill off all the gay people. and yet despite all of human history, despite disease and persecution, gay children continue to be born in small percentages in every culture and at every level of society. kinda makes you think there might be some purpose to it, doesn't it? (i actually have a theory about this purpose, but that's for another time)

i can't tell you how disappointing it is that you would equate a love i might feel for another human being with an addiction or vice like alcoholism. if you insist on seeing it as a 'crime against nature,' i hope you see it as a victimless crime. i hope you at -least- acknowledge that healthy gay relationships exist, and that being gay and living a worthy, dignified life are not mutually exclusive things. i suspect that you do acknowledge this, and this is why you are able to remain friends with your gay aquaintances.

anyway, you do seem like a cool guy. if you didn't, i wouldn't think it worth writing all this.

Jay Leno has sterotyped many lifestyles, ethnicities, presidents, politicians, etc... all in the name of:HUMOR.
His show is fluff, nothing to get in a huff about. I am not homophobic and am very excited that many gay people have stepped out of the "closet." Bless all of you.
I do agree that gay-bashing & homophobia are ramant here in the U.S. It saddens me that so many people have been attacked by those who are just plain IGNORANT! It scares me to think that someone can be hurt by others who are actually afraid of people that are gay...those who are so afraid they hurt gay people.
I guess I have to agree that Jay Leno should stop his jokes about gay people...it is dangerous! As I sit here typing, at first agreeing with Leno; I have convinced myself that he is wrong. My justifications for this change of "heart" is: gay people are being attacked. Making "fun" of them only promotes more ignorance and hatred of them.
I am amazed that my decision about Leno has been changed by my own thoughts; has been changed about the ignorance of gay jokes. Jay, I will still watch your show...NO MORE GAY JOKES! It is dangerous, and feeds the minds of the ignorant!

First to mattjh, "It is natural for guys to be repulsed by something which is so instinctively wrong to them.". Um... NO. If finding gay people disgusting were an "instincitve" response, then gay people would vomit everytime they see a hetero couple kiss. Sorry, but your disgust is a learned behaviour. Thank your parents for me.

Second to Bob Jones, you hate when groups whine about not being treated fairly and can't handle a joke. Please site a reference for your claim that there is a "group" behind this open letter. I see one man making a comment. I can take a joke. For examples of funny gay jokes, please tune in to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report. Making fun of Brokeback Mountain because you can't take gay love seriously is a low point for any comedian and Jay Leno's been scraping the bottom of this well for some time now.

Finally to Landon, I'm sure you have some great friends and you are very lucky. I have been struggling for quite some time to accept people like you. I know I have missed out on many great friendships because I can never accept people with beliefs like yours. I appalaud your ability to love your friends despite your disagreement in who they love.

It is natural for guys to be repulsed by something which is so instinctively wrong to them.

Let the gay jokes continue. Bugger anyone who is offended.

What I absolutley hate is when groups want to be treated like regular people, yet can't handle when they are joked about (just like everybody is). I hate people who cry at any sign of joking.

Leno makes jokes about everyone - deal with it, you're drawing attention to yourself now is that being treated like everybody else?

I am British, and Leno makes a lot of jokes about British People and their Teeth - do I care? No. Do I laugh? Yes. If you can't laugh at yourself, or stereotypes then you have problems. Leno doesn't believe the stereotypes. Who does? Will & Grace is worse - but its a comedy!
