TiVo will let you record two shows at once

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 26th 2006 3:37PM

tivoSure, having a TiVo is nice, but what happens when you want to record two shows that are on at the same time? Starting the first of May, new Tivo boxes will be available that will allow viewers to record two shows simultaneously. Currently the boxes, like VCRs, only allow a person to record one show at a time. This is a very cool move on TiVo's part, I think, and it's one the company needed to make as it tries to set itself apart from other DVR manufacturers. The new boxes will hold up to 80 hours worth of programming, and will cost $99.99 (but that's after the activation fee and rebate).

Angel it is possible to record HD TV easily you just need to get an HD tuner for about 70 bucks. If your spare computers are decent, and they have a reasonably sized hard drive. Then build your own DVR, it's the best because of no recurring fees. NONE AT ALL!

#13 Aaron: I can record HD to my Mac mini by connecting my cable box directly to it with a firewire cable. The software I use to record came in the free download of Apple's Firewire SDK.

The ability to record two shows at the same time has been around with Tivo 4ever. My Series 2, and dual LMB satellite, has done this for the last 2 years flawlessly... you can even watch a 3rd show from your Now Playing list. I am not sure what the news here is.

Carissa must work for Tivo. Dish updates their DVRs and I have yet to miss a show- the DVR records shows when they changes nights/times. I have 7-8 friends with Tivo who prefer my DVR- no sub fees, phony lifetime (BOX) guarantee. Dish also has DVR's that record HD- just not enough HD out there for me to make the move.
I know they were first, doesn't follow they're the best.

Carissa, i have to agree with you. I rent a DVR thru Comcast, and even though it allows you to record 2 shows at once (a really nice feature, btw), i've had several problems with it. In fact, i just had the box replaced for the 3rd time in 2 years.

Aaron....I've been thinking about doing the HTPC since we have two spare computers sitting around. What about recording HD? Is that possible?

#2 The lifetime subscription goes with and is only for the box that it was originally purchased for. The "lifetime" in lifetime subscription means the lifetime of the box, not the owner.

Don't let the lack of dual recording lead you to believe that a non-TiVo DVR is of the same calibur as TiVo. You may be able to record two shows at once, but with quality, reliability and features, TiVo remains number one. This will just add a new dimension to their superiority.

HAHA!! Everyone should just get Beyond TV for their computer, I can record as many shows as I want if I just install more TV tuners in my computer. Plus, there's no monthly fees...JUST A ONE TIME FEE!!! Only 69.99 for the software, and you're set for life. I find it crazy people buying Tivo's and stuff, when there's things out there for the home computer that do the exact same thing at a fraction of the price. And yes you can easily hook it up to your TV. It's the only way to go!!!

I have an HD-DVR from Scientific Atlanta and it allows me to record two shows at once and watch a third previously recorded program at the same time. Scientific Atlanta has already released an HD-DVR with 4 tuners, but my cable company doesn't offer them yet.
