When did ESPN expand PTI into SportsCenter?

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 26th 2006 8:53PM
Pardon the InterruptionI haven't watched ESPN's Pardon the Interruption in a while; I listen to Jim Breuer's Sirius show from 4-6 PM and never seem to remember to switch over to PTI at 5:30. Not to say I don't like it; in fact, Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser have a chemistry together I haven't seen since Gene Siskel was still alive and arguing with Roger Ebert.

But when I do get around to watching the show, I notice a troubling trend: ESPN has decided to expand the show, delaying the final "Big Finish" segment until about fifteen minutes into the 6:00 SportsCenter.

What gives? I mean, I know why they're doing it; PTI fans will stick with SC until that segment airs, thus boosting the highlight show's ratings. But I still think it's a cheap and manipulative move by ESPN. I no longer watch SC because the anchors there are too worried about creating catchphrases than actually describing sports highlights. To have to sit through 15 minutes of some flunkie going "say 'ello to my little friend!" when someone hits a home run just to see PTI finish just stinks. Guess I won't be watching the "Big Finish" anytime soon. Too bad.

wow, i didnt even realize the big finish was still on it, they never explained what happened, one day it was just gone. i watched like a minute of SC after it one day and didnt see it and was all confused. not a big deal, but the finish is entertaining. i dont watch it in non-football season but usually just delete right when 'statboy' comes on, he is so annoying

I am more of an Around the Horn fan.. Even though Realli is a blatant and irritating Yankee fan, it's great to see sports morons like Woody Paige put in their place from time to time.

I'm in the same boat -- used to love SportsCenter, absolutely hate it now. We usually watch {PTI, then the first ten minutes of the local news, then flip back over to catch the Big Finish.

And just let me add: I'm focused like a zebra.

I've been watching PTI since day one. LOVE this show, and it's not the same when either Tony or Michael is out and someone else fills in. They just have great chemistry.

We do what it seems like many others are doing, DVR'ing PTI plus the first 20 or so minutes of SportsCenter. We make dinner, then watch PTI while eating and fast forward to the big finish.

I've got one other thing to say on this topic...Penguin Dance!

My husband got me hooked on PTI a few years back (I even watch it when he's out of town) and we TiVo it too. Wasn't thrilled when they first made the change to include the Big Finish during SC, but we just either watch it or fast forward thru the TiVo part of SC (unless he wants to watch it). Either way, I need my Tony and Wilbon fix every day.

There's also a PTI podcast at espn.com that you can download and listen to whenever you like. Though it's hard to appreciate the subtleties of "trampoline bear" through audio only.

Sorry, I've got to disagree. First, because I've got TiVo, and I don't have to worry about it. JeffL, if you want to TiVo it, all you have to do is set your TiVo to tape past the end. I have it tape all of SC, and just fastforward to the Big Finish, which usually occurs right before 6:15(EST).

Secondly, you get more PTI this way. I thought about switching to TiVo'ing the 6:30 ESPN2 showing, but then you miss the Happy, Happy Time segment.

And, SportsCenter isn't bad. I'd still watch that over local stuff, but, you know, its not Sports Night :)

It's not impossible to TiVo, just pad the recording by 15-20 minutes and then skip through SC until you see Tony or Michael again. PTI is one of the greatest TiVo shows already with the on screen timers so you know exactly how many times to hit the 30 second skip to get through that boring story. Now there's just more PTI to love.

I haven't watched it on ESPN in awhile because of work, so I've been watching it either on ESPN2 or ESPN news. If you watch it on ESPN2 or ESPN News, one is on at 6:30 and the other at 7 if I'm not mistaken, they have the big finish as a part of the actual show, at the end, like it's meant to be.

Watch the replay on ESPNNews (630) and sometimes its on ESPN2 some nights (7 or 730) and they edit in the Big Finish into the show on the replays..
