Whoa, Nelly! Keith Jackson retires ... again

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 27th 2006 1:29PM
Keith JacksonToday, ABC college football announcer Keith Jackson told Richard Sandomir of The New York Times that he is retiring ... again. Sports fans will recall that the man with the classic Southern cadence and down-home sayings retired in 1998, only to return the next year to do a limited west coast schedule of games. Eventually he returned to being the network's #1 college football voice, doing games all over the country. Some retirement.

This time around, Jackson, 77, told Sandomir that he was given a schedule by ABC that included east coast games. Since he didn't think that would be good for his health, he decided to retire and "learn to be a senior citizen," despite a lucrative offer by ABC/ESPN to stay. Jackson, who also called baseball and other sports for ABC, was the original play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football when it premiered in 1970. Needless to say, he's been on our TVs for quite some time, and he'll be missed.

Thanks John. For those of you who grew up rooting for the Pac-10 I can see how you'd think he is great. I grew up in Tucson and love the Pac-10, but I went to Notre Dame. Maybe he just hates Notre Dame (like many do) but its pathetic when he blatantly shows his hatred when he should be a professional. It's not just ND, but when any Pac-10 team plays a team from the east he becomes unbearable. He constantly call plays that dont happen, gives biased opinions constantly slanted to USC and the Pac-10, and doesnt even bother to do his homework and know the player names. Thus you get commentary like "number 95 throws an incomplete pass" when in fact the incomplete pass is an interception. Or a missed field goal actually goes through. Or the ball is down at the one yard line... even though it really is a touchdown and he doesn't bother to correct himself. Thus I hope he woah nelly's himself to permanent retirement.

Also, George, speaking from experience, the ND broadcasts are equally as pathetic. Ask any ND fan and they will tell you Hayden and Hammond are very mediocre. Hayden went to SC. I dont see how that could in anyway be a love fest.

Jake, I agree completely. The Rose Bowl was the last straw. He's a senile old coot, and his re-retirement is good news.

I'm a huge Oregon Ducks fan and I love the guy. I've never ever felt like he was biased towards SC, in fact I always felt like he gave plenty of credit where it was due.

I have a ton of friends that are Cal fans that feel the same way.

Compare his telecasts to the disgusting lovefest that occurs when NBC hosts Notre Dame games and its like night and day.

He's a legend.

To: Jake (#3):

Keith Jackson in no way comes off as pompous or arrogant..Yes, he may be a few years past his prime, but he is the voice of college football...no doubt about...

"It's the grand-daddy of them all..the Rose Bowl!"

Who will he be missed by? He is a blatant west coast homer who is the most pompous, arrogant, and senile broadcaster on television. He can't say a single sentence without sounding grandiose, and he often doesnt even talk about the game at hand. When he does, he calls plays that never happen (like saying a feild goal was no good when in fact it was) and he often gets player's names wrong. He's sloppy and too biased to provide decent commentary. If you are a college football fan and dont root for USC then you will know what I am talking about. This man needed to go 20 years ago and I hope he finally does.
