Survivor: Exile Island: Perilous Scramble

by Deidre Woollard, posted Apr 28th 2006 2:15AM
survivor(S12E12) This season has caused me to reevaluate what I think of as successful Survivor strategy. Terry, who is by all accounts one of the toughest players ever to play the game, is struggling in this game where none of the usual rules apply. The lunatics are running the asylum which is ably demonstrated by Shane who plays with a wood Blackberry and busily emails his imaginary friends. As Danielle says "he's nuts." Or is he? Is Shane's craziness actually a form of strategy? There's something about him that reminds me of Richard Hatch (not just the nudity). He is good at catching his teammates off guard and maybe he really is running this whole thing.

At the reward challenge, Terry, Danielle and Courtney easily win and ship Aras off to Exile Island. But first the remaining three play for a GMC Yukon. If Terry were smart, he would throw this challenge and let one of the girls win. Terry is too competitive to let this happen. It always amazes me during the car challenge that people routinely fight tooth and nail for the car, rather than using it as leverage to try and get in good with the tribe and possibly be closer to the big prize. He is savvy enough to know he should bond with the girls and he gets right down to business offering the girls an alliance. Still his approach is so transparent and he seems to have such little respect for anyone else around him that he's not exactly Captain Charm. The Big Daddy paternal act that made him leader of the pack in his old tribe has faded and been replaced by a bullying join-me-because-I'm-winning-all-the-challenges bravado.

Back at camp, Cirie catches Shane a birthday fish. Funny how he acts a lot more sane without Courtney around. Cirie is hard to figure out. Sometimes she seems to be just coasting along but other times there seems to be some deep strategy going on here.

I was talking with a friend about this season's challenges and we agreed that they seem more physically challenging than in other seasons. This week's immunity challenge, which involves holding up your body weight on ropes, is no exception. Poor Cirie, she has to hold up as much as the men without as much upper body strength. She isn't the first to go though, Shane is the first one out but Cirie quickly follows. It's amazing that someone who is not super skinny has made it this far, but in challenges like this, her weight works against her. Courtney's yoga training is an advantage in this challenge but Terry wins yet again.

The flippy-floppy Danielle is the wild card going into tribal council. Cirie pushes her to vote for Courtney. The votes are between Courtney and Aras (except for Shane who votes for Danielle). Terry's plan is to get Aras, his only real physical rival, out of there. But it's not meant to be, Courtney gets voted out. Will this usher in a new saner Shane?

At least it was great to see Bruce at the jury.

Sure Terry needs to win immunity at the next challenge. It keeps it away from Aras. He then gives it to Danielle and has the idol protecting him so it is down to Aras and Cirie going next. Terry and Danielle vote for Aras and of course Cirie will vote for him also. Aras gone. Then Terry and Danielle hopefully beat out Cirie in the next challenge and it is Terry and Danielle as the final two. Well, with so many old tribe members mad at her for turning on them, they vote along with Sally and Austin and make Terry the overall winner.

I agree, Cirie has been playing brilliantly the whole way through. She's the classic hanger-on, which is historically the most successful overall strategy. But she totally stepped it up by finding the one person around whom Shane and Terry's plans intersected and engineering her ouster. I love seeing brilliant tactical maneuvers in Survivor carried out perfectly and this was that. She even knew the biggest question mark in her plan was Danielle. And she played Aras brilliantly ("if you want to be here tomorrow, you'll vote for Courtney").

Cirie is my pick now.

In a way he does, though it may not matter. As long as he holds the weekly challenge immunity, Aras doesn't.

There is always a chance of Casaya booting Aras because they know going into the final 4 it is hard enough going up against a challenger like Terry and beating him. Having Aras around makes it even tougher if Terry happens to blow the challenge.

I realize this is one of those "Duh!" moments, but Terry won't win the next challenge simply because he doesn't have to.

It's the last time he'll have the opportunity to use the idol, and puts him in the final four.

I enjoy some of Survivor, but this year hasn't been my favorite.

Yeah. He can't trust anyone. After 4 tribal councils he only manages to turn one Casaya member and it's the one who was voted off. It would have been suicide for him to give it up. All he needs to do is make one mistake and lose immunity, so the idol is his one and only get out of jail free card.

marty what are you kidding???
if terry lose immunity he'd be out in a second..
and that will apply the rest of the way also..
NO ONE HAS A CHANCE AGAINST HIM AND IF HE LOSES IMMUINITY AND THE IMMUINITY IDOL HE'S GONE..

Agree with missy that Cirie has the best brains around the asylum island.
Do not know what Terry was thinking winning the immunity challenge. He could have given it to Courtney. Uses the immunity idol if he gets voted out. Keep the alliance with Danielle strong. get Aras off the island and cherry pick between Shane and Cherie.
Now it is Cherie's competition to lose.

You can't be serious to suggest Terry should have let one of the women win the Yukon. He has tried and tried to win their goodwill and form alliances, and all they have done is resisted. Remember he offered Danielle the immunity idol? What more can you offer? He would have been the biggest sucker if he threw the challenge hoping to win allegiance instead of a car.

This guy Terry is amazing. He won 3 challenges in one show. Sometimes he appears to win on nothing but his will to win. And the physicality of the immunity challenge was fair because it was based on body weight. Too bad for Cirie if she showed up for Survivor so overweight. And if Aras is any example, yoga may help your flexibility but not your strength and endurance.
It's funny to watch Shane, in his arrested adolescence and me-first mindset, 'pretend' to be crazy. It's not a stretch.
The alliance of the weak that was Casaya has shown that they can't really compete against one man, Terry. I wish he would win, but I doubt he will. There will probably be some silly puzzle or big board-game challenge that is meant to be gender-neutral, to allow a woman to have a shot at the prize.
