The Office: Drug Testing

by Michael Sciannamea, posted Apr 28th 2006 11:11AM

Michael discusses drugs with
Dwight(S02E16) This season's first so-so episode of The Office started with a great premise when half a joint is found in the company parking lot, and the volunteer Lackawanna County Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Schrute conducts his full (and borderline psychotic) investigation as to who is the drug fiend.

Michael tries to diffuse the situation because he admits that, at an Alicia Keys concert over the weekend, he was handed the joint by a girl with a lip ring. Obviously, he's got a lot to lose if he fails the impending urine test, so he is doing his best to calm Dwight down while espousing the evils of drug use to the rest of the staff.

A subplot that seemed rather childish and didn't seem to go anywhere was Pam and Jim's game of Jinx whereby they said the same thing at the same time, which somehow Pam wins and forces Jim not to speak for the rest of the day until he can buy her a soda (I still don't get it.) However, there were some moments that they looked into each other's eyes without speaking, and you would think their flirtation would come to some sort of climax before the end of the season/Pam's wedding.

Michael eventually gets Dwight to donate his urine to help him pass the drug test. Dwight feels used, and resigns his deputyship. However, all is not lost as Michael rewards him with the title of "Official Security Advisor of the Branch." Of course, Dwight begins to take control, even asking for a gun. We then see Pam at the end talking to the documentary camera and discussing Dwight's relationship with Michael and asking what he (Dwight) gets out of it. She should be asking herself the same thing about her relationship(s) with her fiance Roy and Jim.

In any case, I didn't think this episode was so hot. The Office has been on such a great run this season that it would be natural to have high expectations for each episode. Let's just chalk this one up to a good idea that didn't really take off and hope for a return to greatness next week.

More and more, Dwight reminds me of the BTK killer.

Shemp...when have we ever seen any of them do any office work? With a boss like Michael, how could any work ever get done?

I too thought the episode kinda fluttered out towards the end, but did in fact enjoy the Jim/Pam subplot most :)

Funniest moment was Jim turning the interview around on Dwight. 'You said *I* would be conducting the interview when we first walked in!' Hehe

I thought the episode was very good. I loved the exchange between Dwight and Ryan about getting the search warrant "the hard way."

Ryan. "Yeah, let's do it that way."

The whole Jim/Pam sub-plot was probably one of the best all season. I think I fell in love with Pam in that episode. The only thing that bugged me was how much Dwight went over the edge, it was a bit unrealistic (although still funny) to think that he had no office duties to perform.

How in the world can you think this was a so-so episode with as much Dwight was in it? With Dwight in an episode that much it's bound to be gold and it was.
I don't agree at all.

Consider me someone who thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
I enjoy the show on two levels: as a comedy and for the Jim/Pam relationship (I'm an old (young) romantic with a crush on Pam); and this episode satisfied me on both counts. I actually laughed more than I normally do.

I'm glad we have no more breaks until the end of the season; and I'm ecstatic (but not surprised) that a third season is coming.

Thanks, Bex!

Now I realize why I found that scene so adorable -- Pam nudging the Coke can reminded me of Tramp nudging the meatball toward Lady in "Lady and the Tramp"!

Bex: yeah, the Creed thing was hilarious! I was waiting for him to provide Dwight with an explanation, or for Dwight to immediately accuse him, but "WRONG. Marijuana" was funnier than I could have ever imagined. This show has really gotten the hang of the "introduce one great joke, only to follow it with a better one" formula.
