King of the Hill reaches the big 200

by Adam Finley, posted May 5th 2006 2:31PM

king of the hillI hate to admit it, but if I weren't writing weekly reflections on King of the Hill I don't think I would be watching it. Don't get me wrong, I love King of the Hill, but the show has always been in the most forgettable timeslot imaginable. Despite being essentially tossed aside while shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy are hyped out the wazoo, King of the Hill has remained consistently clever and funny, and May 14 will mark both the end of the season and the show's 200th episode. Thankfully, though, it won't be the end of the series. When this season opened their were rumors it might be the last, but apparently FOX had a change of heart and King of the Hill will be sticking around after all. Executive producer John Altschuler had this to say: "To be blunt, there's not too much that's good on TV. So if you're working on something good, you want to do more." I would say it's that approach that has kept what USA Today calls King of the Hill's "dedicated if small audience" coming back every week. You know, when the show isn't constantly being bumped for NASCAR events.

What is it about this show? I must watch it as least once daily. Now that Will and Grace is gone, this is my only must see show. I gave up on American Idol when I had to watch the wierd guy with the white hair every week. I feel like some one is voting tons for him in order embarris Fox when he wins. King of the Hill always delivers.

One of the reasons passed around re:Fturama's demise was that Groening owned all the rights, thereby cutting Fox out of the money loop. Thia being the case, Fox had no real reason to promote or keep the show going if they weren't going to get their cut. This may be an oversimplification of the reasons, but I think it is a logical explanation.

Also, King of the Hill, dangoltellyouwhatbig200episodesdoggoneitandanewseason,whoo-hoo!

I always wondered why this show got to stick around while Futurama got killed. The numbers were generally similar, they got bumped about the same amount. It's weird.

Maybe Billy West was right, maybe somebody didn't want to see Groening succeed while breaking the rules.

That quote is not from Mike Judge. It is from John Altschuler; see the article.
