Numb3rs: Backscatter

Numb3rs; CBS; Rob Morrow; David Krumholtz(S02E22) Well that was tense. Note to self: I don't ever want to be targeted by the Russian mob. After watching this episode, I get the feeling that it may get in the way doing certain things that I enjoy. Such as living.

After busting a couple of "phishers," Don suddenly finds that his bank accounts have been cleared out. Phishing, by the way, is the term given to sending out phony mass e-mails from banks to lure people into sending in their banking information. Elderly folks are generally targeted because they tend to have larger accounts that aren't used so often. That and many of them don't get this whole "internet" thing that much.

The two computer geeks give up the names of the Russians, but then they somehow make bail (I missed how that happened). Afterwards, their bodies were found underneath a bridge. Again, Russian mob. Bad.

Will Patton was back as LAPD Detective Walker, but he was a much nicer guy this time around. Last we saw him, I remember him being much more of an ass. I like how this show has a small stable of recurring characters such as Patton and that sniper expert played by Lou Diamond Phillips. It really adds to the show when these characters can return every now and then.

Back to the case, Don had been targeted and before long, Charlie too. Russian mobsters were showing up at his lectures, leaving cigarette butts on the floor in his garage. Pretty scary stuff if you think about. Especially after Det. Walker dropped this one: "You know what they say about the Russian mob? They'll shoot you just to see if the gun works." This gets Don pretty worried and he tries to get Charlie off the case, but it doesn't work. The Eppes brothers are stubborn guys.

Using the help of the bank manager who was involved (not by choice though, his employees had been kidnapped), the FBI got the guy. The final scene was interesting though. Don seems to think it would be better if Charlie stopped doing all the sidework for the FBI. After the office shooting last week and now this, it might not be a bad idea and I wonder if it will be incorporated at all into the season finale.

They do an admirable job of capturing the mathematician/geek's compulsion about what he does. The whole "You couldn't stop me from thinking about this if you tried, so you might as well let me write it down" line was great. Even if the first season I remember a line from Charlie where he said something like "I can't control what problems come into my head, I just have to solve them."

The phishers made bail because the Russian Mob guys hacked into the bail system and not only made it seem that Don approved the bail, but used HIS credit card to pay the bail money. They really were making it personal.

I just love this show. It's not always logistically accurate, and there's no way one mathematician would know so much about so many different areas of study, but it's still a great show.

I was really missing Larry in this episode though. He's always good for some comic relief and some interesting commentary.
