What's Thursday without ER?

by Anna Johns, posted May 8th 2006 9:34AM
er
ER
has been on Thursday nights on NBC for as long as I can remember. OK, actually it's only been in the 10 pm timeslot since 1994. And I haven't watched it since 1996 (I couldn't handle breaking down into a sobbing mess each week). But, still. It's an institution on Thursday nights. It's a throwback to the good ol' days when NBC was on top.

Well, those days are over. Now, NBC is reportedly considering moving it to a different night. Apparently, NBC thinks the move could boost the network's ratings during late primetime on Tuesdays or Wednesdays by pairing ER up with Law & Order or SVU. It looks like ER's replacement will most likely be the new Aaron Sorkin/Thomas Schlamme series, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. If that happens, I will definitely be returning to NBC at 10 pm on Thursdays (hey, I'm already there for Earl and The Office anyway).

Don't care about ER moving, I was over that show in 1996 as well. It needs to be put to rest.

But am I the only person who thinks 10pm is too late for an Aaron Sorkin show? One of the reasons Sports Night failed to pick up a bigger audience was because it was on at 9:30, and people were just too tired to think that hard so late at night.

I almost don't want to get too attached to it already, for fear that NBC will blame the show and not the timeslot...but then, I've pretty much conditioned myself to never expect any show to last more than 6 episodes.

I immediately vowed to never watch ER again when Rocket Romano got killed by the same helocopter that cut his arm off. I also didn't like when Dr. Dave left. But at least he got to kick ass in Over There (are they bringing that show back?)

I'm not too sure about this. We've all seen how giving the Law & Order timeslot to Heist worked really well... but granted, Studio 60 seems a hell of a lot more promising than Heist ever did.

That said, I'd worry about Studio 60 going up against Without A Trace.

As for ER, I don't really care and I haven't for years.

I can't stop watching ER now! I don't want to see it move, but will probably set my DVR for wherever it goes...

ER was apparently renewed through the 2008 season. ER has been a good show lately, but I can't stand all this Dr. Carter crap he doesnt really have a plot line. I think It should stay on Thursdays. But I dont know. It would probably be television suicide, if you change something that has been like that in the same time slot for 10+ years, look at what happened to Law and Order when they tried moving it to the 9:00 time slot for two episodes.

A move to Tuesday or Wednesday might be just what the show needs for its final year or two. Thursday has become CBS' night, and will most likely be that way for several years to come. Sorkin's new show will do well, I think, but I still believe the night belongs to CBS. I know I'll watch Sorkin's new show because I personally can't stand Without a Trace, have only watched one episode and thought it was over-acted. I think if Without a Trace was on a night without CSI's lead-in it wouldn't be as successful. Tuesday night seems like the better night for ER since Law & Order: SVU is so successful -- it could be a good lead-in.

Move E.R.?! Absurd. Listen, it may not always be fantastic these days, but it's still consistently one of the best shows on TV. Its crappy moments are still better than 95% of what's on television. I've been watching E.R. since the beginning and I think it's highly disrespectful to move any show that has been so successful for so long in the one time slot.

I think moving E.R. is a good move.
NBC's rationale may be that they may have their next great drama in Studio 60 and they want to put it in their most coveted timeslot.
E.R. has been losing viewers to Without A Trace for years now (even though it still appeals to higher-income viewers).
With that being said, the show has been on for 12 seasons and has delivered great ratings for years...
There is also a rumor that Without A Trac will move to Sundays since CBS is getting rid of their Sunday movie block.

I am still watching ER but it has not been good lately. There were a few strong episodes at the beginning of the season with Abby's pregnany and the Neela/Ray relationship. However, the last episode took place entirely in Darfur and even though I love Dr Carter, the episode was bad. I am not sure ER is a strong enough show to move to another night and keep its viewers. Risky move for NBC if you ask me.

Thursday has become the most boring night on TV. There is nothing that appeals to me. I gave up on ER years ago, except when Thandie Newton was guest starring.

Would love to see NBC re-energize Thursday with its new series.
