Arrested Development season 3 DVD coming in August

by Bob Sassone, posted May 9th 2006 1:18PM
Arrested DevelopmentFirst FOX said the third season of the show was going to be released in June, then they canceled that release and said that they didn't know what day the set would be released. But now it looks almost certain that the show isn't coming back, to FOX or Showtime or ABC or the web or anyplace else, so FOX is going to release the third season set on August 29.

There were 20 episodes this season? I didn't even realize that.

EMMY WATCH FOR "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT"
(Part III)

A hotly-anticipated race during this year's EMMY Awards will be the pivotal category of BEST LEAD ACTOR in a Comedy Series.

In the past year, Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) won over Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Eric McCormack (Will and Grace), Zach Braff (Scrubs) and AD favorite JASON BATEMAN as level-headed son Michael Bluth.

At the Golden Globes last January, Braff earned a nomination along with Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men), Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) and Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm). But all were roundly defeated by Steve Carell (The Office).

TV Guide's Dream EMMY Ballot has listed Bateman, Braff, Carell, Lee and Fred Goss (Sons and Daughters).

Other unmentioned possible candidates may include Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Kevin James (The King of Queens), George Lopez (George Lopez), Bernie Mac (The Bernie Mac Show), plus even Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle) and Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris).

Therefore, where does JASON BATEMAN stand amidst such heavy competition?

Granted that Carell is the likeliest newcomer who'll be taking Romano's place in the magic circle, Jason 1 (AD) can safely maintain his own position therein only if Jason 2 (Earl) becomes a threat to either McCormack or Shalhoub rather than him. Braff remains more secure thanks to his Globe and SAG nods.

As for the probability of winning, Bateman's final chance to score a trophy might be ultimately derailed by the 40-year old virgin.

Nevertheless, AD fans will be cheering for JASON BATEMAN to be nominated a second time at this year's EMMYS.

2006 EMMY WATCH FOR "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT"
(Part II)

Among the most unpredictable categories in the EMMY awards race has always been the ones for BEST GUEST ACTOR and BEST GUEST ACTRESS (in both Drama and Comedy Series).

One of AD's biggest quandaries is the show's frustrated undertaking to justly earn a nomination within these key categories. They have yet to succeed inspite of various laudable and meritorious guest parts enacted by hilarious scene stealers during recent years: Liza Minnelli, Henry Winkler, Judy Greer, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Carl Weathers, Ed Begley Jr., Martin Short, Ben Stiller and others.

Given those disappointing omissions from the last 2 seasons, what realistic chances do guest performers in AD's third year have to be nominated? In my personal opinion, I must defiantly contend that any POTENTIAL NOMINEE would be a total loser only if he or she doesn't even TRY getting into the magic circle at least, particularly since this is for the final 13 episodes of AD.

CHARLIZE THERON, an Oscar-winning actress, may rely upon earlier precedents that cover known box-office film stars who "slummed" their way towards a nod: Michael Douglas (Will and Grace), Brad Pitt (Friends), Susan Sarandon (Malcolm In The Middle), Julia Roberts (Law and Order), Ewan McGregor (ER) and Sharon Stone (The Practice).

SCOTT BAIO also has a pretty good shot at a nomination in the wake of other beloved television veterans and pop culture figures who've delivered surprisingly excellent performances in offbeat guest roles: Tom Selleck (Friends), Cyndi Lauper (Mad About You), William Shatner (3rd Rock From The Sun) and Tony Danza (The Practice). Even former Happy Days castmates Marion Ross (Touched By An Angel) and Henry Winkler (The Practice) got nominated.

JUSTINE BATEMAN's extraordinary participation in AD's memorable third season finale ought to be given due recognition as well like other underappreciated yet highly talented comic beauties: Shelley Long (Frasier), Jamie Gertz (Ally McBeal) and Christina Applegate (Friends).

Therefore, I emphatically say to Charlize, Scott and Justine as outstanding guest performers in AD's last season:
GO FOR IT!!!
You're going to lose more by not even trying. And it's all for AD's concluding 13 episodes.
Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

2006 EMMY WATCH FOR "ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT"

In their first season, AD won both WRITING and DIRECTING awards for their pilot episode. Their sophomore year garnered another writing prize ("The Righteous Brothers") yet they lost best directing to the pilot for Desperate Housewives.

So how does the present competition stack up during their last season?

Two other long-running sitcoms are also making their final bows (Will and Grace, Malcolm In The Middle). Brand new comedies will be submitting their unique pilots. (Everybody Hates Chris, My Name Is Earl, How I Met Your Mother, Sons and Daughters, The Office, Weeds). Plus let's not forget the usual suspects in contention (Scrubs, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and of course Desperate Housewives).

Fans can reasonably expect AD to be nominated again. But winning may not be so easy anymore when an "entourage" of "housewives" confront "your mother" at "the office".

Opie's gang really better send in those 3rd season dvds of AD to EMMY voters before it's too late.

Great news about the upcoming release of AD's third and final season DVDs. Fans everywhere will definitely be looking forward to their imminent availability.

However, the folks behind AD should also remember to prepare special copies of their very best episodes for the 2006 EMMYS in the next few months. They really need to begin mapping out an effective awards campaign strategy. And hopefully, they ought to realize there will be more empty nomination slots up for grabs in the comedy series categories now that "Everybody Loves Raymond" is gone.

Deserving NOMINATIONS should finally be handed out to Portia de Rossi as best supporting actress, Justine Bateman and Charlize Theron as best guest actresses, plus Will Arnett, Tony Hale and David Cross as best supporting actors.

AWARDS must be ultimately bestowed upon Jeffrey Tambor as best supporting actor, Jessica Walter as best supporting actress, Scott Baio as best guest actor, Jason Bateman as best lead actor, best writing and directing for the historic two-part series finale, and of course, best comedy series.

Time's running short, guys.
Let's deliver those 3rd season AD dvds to the Emmy voters as soon as possible.
