How I Met Your Mother: Milk

by Ryan j Budke, posted May 9th 2006 12:53PM
how i met your mother; ted; robin; barney; suit up(S01E21) One episode left and Lily had me worried there for a while. After  her reservations the past couple of weeks, and her desperate plea for Ted to come and rescue her, I thought one of two things were going to happen. She was either going to make a move on Ted, or she really was going to make a break for it and run away. Lily's justification for being freaked out probably doesn't sit well with those of you that haven't been around friends or family right before they get married. Needless to say, it's probably not half as crazy as some of the things people have done when they've had cold feet. On with the show!

One of my favorite parts about this show is how "down to earth" it is. They're very self-referential -- just because six months ago a dating service didn't work for Ted doesn't mean that it would never work. The computerized dating firm that Camryn Manheim ran a couple of months ago had been franchised out and they found Ted's perfect soul mate. Before Ted could made it to his date though, Lily's freaking out led him to spend another evening with Robin. Poor Ted; it just reaffirmed how much he still felt for Robin. I'm hoping that Robin and Ted end up together long enough to realize that they don't work. Not that they hate each other, but sometimes (and at least in this case we know that's how it ends) people are better off as friends than they are in a relationship. I just want to get to that point so we can move beyond the Robin stuff, but I realize that in doing so the show will be dangerously close to jumping the shark.

The side story with Marshall and Barney and their interbuilding prank feud was awesome. Not only was it the comic relief, but it also served to show that Marshall wasn't quite as confident in himself and the marriage as he would seem. He just had a slightly different way of showing it than running off to San Francisco for an art program. All in all, a great episode. It's going to be very bittersweet with next week's finale. I wonder if we'll finally meet the mother, or maybe we already have. Let me know what you think.

Barneyisms of the Week:
Really? Cause I could have sworn you fell straight outta heaven, angel. Bing.
Let's make that bastard pay.
Ted: "I need a favor."
Barney: "Anything for you bro."
Ted: "I need you come out to Duchess County and pick me up."
Barney: "Nope."

I too have kept the phrase "Aunt Robin" firmly in mind, largely because I was initially so crestfallen upon hearing it ("...but...he's so cute...and she's so cute...so aren't they, like...supposed to go be cute together now? Isn't that what the prepackaged configuration of Sitcommery 101 dictates?" Yeah, sorry...years of being subjected to sub-par, formulaic programming [ultimately unlike HIMYM!] mainly just re-emphasized for me the beauty of diminished expectations).

In any case, it's good to see other folks also keen on resolving the whole Ted-and-Robin thing once and for all. It's like, the hors d'oeuvres have been great, but yo, are the writers and producers going to get to any hints of the main course before the end of the season? (Mind you, as appetizers go, Barney's inestimable one-liners, in The Doog's impeccable delivery, are almost enough to make us forget that we still don't know who these friggin' kids' Mother even IS, never mind how she was Met.)

What I'm *really* wondering about now, though, is whether in the Sacred Saget Sermons we've ever heard the term, "Aunt Lily"?! If it's found to be lacking, that could definitely color any further conspiracy theories...ya think?

Chaim, I agree with this: Wouldn't it be funny if Marshal ended up with Robin and Ted ended up with Lilly?

That was exactly what I was thinking as I watched the show last night (dvr-ed it). I have this feeling that at least Lilly and Ted end up together.

i just wrote a paper on this show and i felt like it realy has captured how life is for twenty-somethings today like how friends captured the somewhat life of the previous generation of twenty somethings

this shows proves week after week why it so fresh and funny. I loved it. Every second of it. Barney is awesome, so is Ted as is everyone on this show.

Did anyone else feel that there was some chemistry between Ted and Lilly on the side of the road. I don't know why, but I thought they were gonna kiss a couple times.

Wouldn't it be funny if Marshal ended up with Robin and Ted ended up with Lilly?

I also want them to bring back the kids. I don't like it when they drop a gag. Maybe not every week, but once in a while I want to see those kids again. It made it feel more like a story.

This is exactly why I agree with Christina that they need to resolve the Robin thing soon. A lot of people are forgetting stuff that happened earlier in the season. The kids DEFINITELY called him "Dad" in the early episodes, but now that they've been written out, stuff like that isn't there to remind us.

Conspiracy Theory:

Is Ted, (Bob Saget voice) talking to HIS kids or his niece and nephew?
