Television for babies: Let the debate begin

by Anna Johns, posted May 11th 2006 9:39AM
babyfirsttvI suspect that the pitch meeting for this new channel for babies sounded like something from Death to Smoochy, where television execs who look like Jon Stewart and Catherine Keener talk about how babies are an undiscovered television demographic.

Launching today on DirecTV is BabyFirst TV, with all-infant programming all the time. Programming will include stuff from Brainy Baby and First Impressions DVDs, as well as a storytime. No other information is available and the network's website wasn't working as of midnight Wednesday.

Television for toddlers is a hot button issue with a lot of parents, parenting experts, and those who just like to weigh in on such things. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against babies watching any kind of television (did anyone tell this to the folks at Baby Einstein?). However, studies show that an estimated 68% of children under 2 watch at least one video a day and... this shocked me... 26% of kids under 2 have a television in their bedroom. Wha?

The creators of BabyFirstTV are getting a lot of flack from parenting experts who say that their programming gives parents an excuse not to interact with their children. The people at BabyFirstTV say that their programming--for babies six months to three years old--is meant to encourage interaction between kid and adult. Oh, and it's $10 a month to subscribe.

P.S. I didn't create the channel, I'm just the messenger. Feel free to direct your comments at Regency Enterprises and DirecTV.

I was watching the programming on this new channel for about 10 minutes when it debuted. As a mother of 2, I was always under the impression that no child under the age of 2 should be allowed to watch telelvision. Children this age much prefer social interaction with a person. I think the concepts are ok, but as for me, my children were almost 3 years old before they were really allowed to watch tv for any period of time.
I do think that parents will "park" their baby/toddler as a means for "babysitting" their child.
By doing this, we are depriving the child of much needed HUMAN interaction, as well as creating the next generation of "couch potatoes". This in not a healthy choice. No wonder obesity is on the rise among our young children.
I sincerely hope that parents will have the common sense to "police" what their children watch and interact with them more. And children certainly do not need to have televisions in their own rooms. I never did and even now as an adult, still don't. My children will watch tv in the family room. My children still prefer reading books to tv and that's really a better choice (for my children, at least).
Let's keep our children active.

Hey, I agree with the sentiment that children under 2 having a TV in their bedrooms is stooopid. I didn't have a TV in my bedroom until uh, I was six or seven. If a kid wants to watch TV, they should do in a place where adults can monitor them, like the living room. At least, that's what I plan to do.
