Lost producer promises big answers in season finale

by Anna Johns, posted May 15th 2006 8:14AM
lost logoIn this week's edition of Newsweek, Lost producer Carlton Cuse promises that the season finale will answer some very big, looming questions. What questions? 1) Why did the plane crash? (Ohhh! That's a biggie!); 2) What happens if the button isn't pushed; and 3) "We're going to resolve the Michael-and-Walt story." The article also quotes Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly talking about how some actors are becoming high maintenance and misbehaving on set (no, they don't name names).

I kind-of feel like we already know what happens when the button isn't pushed: NOTHING. Last week, we learned that the button-pushing is just an experiment. But, we've never actually seen anything past the hieroglyphics.

With all those big questions answered, what do you think next season will be all about?

Take a look at http://www.crystalinks.com/grids.html Node 45 on the Becker Hagens Planetary Grid system is nearest to where Flight 815 would have crashed and close to the lost numbers grid reference discovered during series 1.

We still don't know what standards the others abide by since they have killed or have tried to kill innocent people; Ethan killed Scott(Steve?)before kidnapping Charlie and Claire and he did hang Charlie, the guy with the beard left Sawyer, Jin, and Michael to die (Sawyer and Jin; murderer and thug but why Michael?),Goodwin killed that guy Ana Lucia locked up in the pit, Henry Gale killed Henry Gale. What did he do!? He was just a guy trying to ride a balloon around the world.

Henry said he came for Locke implying he's good.I can't think of anything majorly bad he's ever done because he's usually been the victim, and wasn't Charlie a victim by being seduced into drugs by his brother? Henry said Goodwin believed Ana could be redeemed and they did try to take Eko, does that mean they believe in redemption?

Maybe the others were the first subjects of the Dharma Initiative and they too are being experimented with; there are 6 orientation films and it's possible each film conflicts with the other and messes with the perceptions of each other...or we could go back to the old theory that they have "the sickness" that Rousseau believes in.

more likely killing Anna Lucia was a revenge thing for the others that she killed on the other side of the island

Where do the "others" get their information from in order to decide which of the survivors are "good" and which are "bad"? i.e. they must have access to a database of background information on each of the survivors. SO the "others" have a control room and cumputer database. This also leads one to believe that the survivors were chosen and did not arrive by accident.
Be funny is Oceanic was owned by a Korean Company....

Many of the facilities look unused, but they carry printed reports which are current. How come?

The database, mentioned above, is current. How come?

Supplies were air dropped so someone off the island is aware of the existence of people there.

I agree. Prisoners need guards. I'm not agreeing or commenting on the Purgatory theory, but someone has to keep the island's inhabitants in check, and the others are a perfect balance, at this point, for the survivors.

As for the "Purgatory" angle, if that's true, we should be getting more from the other survivors to support this, honestly. If they're all there as punishment for their sins, we've focused too much on this one small group of recurring characters to effectively have the viewer buy it as purgatory for all.

And, for another "purgatory" question, why did the Others try to take Eko if they're only coming for the people who are absolved of blame or sin?

We know they've taken (or tried) all the children, and then there's Locke too, but why did they try to take Eko, if absolution from sin/death/material greed is a supposed requirement?

The thing that interests me with Michael is that because he was freeing Henry Gale he effectively had to silence whomever would have seen him - which as it happens was Ana Lucia. He then accidentally shot Libby - and seemed shocked/upset by it. However if it was purely a case of doing it to free Walt you would have thought killing Ana Lucia would have been far harder for him, even if she was a target on the behest of the others and it was a convenient coincidence that she was guarding Henry as well then he still seemed a bit unfeeling about it. Has he actually been turned to some extent?

We still don't know whether the Lost crew stumbled upon this experiment, if they were fully conceived as being part of it, or something between the two.

I am still not convinced that the Others are the brains of this operation -- mostly because the writers have gone out of their way to make the others look like the bad guys.

1) Locke stops Ecko from pushing the button, and as a result, Locke ends up back in a wheelchair.

2) Oceanic Air is owned by the Hanso Foundation.

3) Michael leads the other survivors into a trap. In return for freeing the prisoner and shooting Ana Lucia, Walt is returned to him.
