The New Adventures of Old Christine: Exile on Lame Street

by Anna Johns, posted May 16th 2006 2:32PM
hamish linklater; new adventures of old christine(S01E11)  Darnit, CBS! The schedule says Old Christine starts at 9:31 but the network keeps starting it early, so my TiVo always cuts off the first joke of the episode. Maybe I'll start caring enough to change my TiVo to a manual start at 9:30.

There were two good things about this episode: Matthew (Hamish Linklater) and the box office guy. I missed the first joke from Matthew, but I did dig the game where he had Christine guess what people in the obituaries were asking for 'in leiu of flowers'. I sure hope the writers make more use of Matthew when Christine returns for season two. And, the guy in the box office did a bang-up job with his scene. He played the sarcasm very well, making Christine think she can get into the Rolling Stones concert at the last minute-- not once but twice. That could've been played over-the-top but he took a more even approach to it.

As for the rest of the episode, it was pretty humiliating for Christine. She goes to the Rolling Stones concert to prevent her husband from letting their son go to the bathroom by himself. Her attempts at using her sex appeal to get in were funny- especially when she flashed the concessions guy and only got a small diet coke out of the deal. What I liked about the overall story was the real-life lesson about divorce, and how, when parents have joint custody, they don't have to make unilateral decisions about the welfare of the child. Christine learned she needed to step back and let her ex-husband be a parent in his own way.

Note: There are two new episodes of Old Christine next Monday, at 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm.

Good suggestion, Doc. I'm surprised it doesn't get covered here, what with the two shows bookending it getting that coverage.

No one does a better job with the observer's one-liner than Conchata Ferrell as Berta in this show.

And it's nice to see a kid played as a dolt, rather than the usual "Bonaduce Syndrome" kids who are miniature, wisecrackin' adults.

Just go ahead and tell your tivo to record Two and a Half Men as well as Christine. It's a funny show and someone should be covering it here.
