Survivor: the most hysterical headline of the day

by Bob Sassone, posted May 17th 2006 9:44AM
Richard Hatch and his checkHave the Onion writers hacked into CNN.com and started tinkering with the articles there? In a story about first Survivor winner getting 51 months in jail for tax evasion, this is the headline they used:

'FAT NAKED GUY' GETS 51 MONTHS FOR 'SURVIVOR' TAX DODGE

Um ... fat naked guy? I mean, yeah, he was a fat naked guy, but he's also known as "Richard Hatch" (it's even in the story below the headline). I guess it could have been worse. They could have called him that "fat, naked gay guy."

Update: I think I confused some people with this post, so read my explanation in the comments (#7).

Wow good thing that was cleared up by Ben. Because for a second there I thought all gay people evade taxes. Which I guess now I'll have to stop arguing that Willie Nelson is gay.

Thanks for not taking things to far Ben. At least now I can stick to the other stereotypes!

P.S. I guesss I should write that I'm being sarcastic since he didn't get your message either Bob.

P.P.S. And I don't hate gay people either if that's what your response will be Ben. I live in Canada, we all love gay people. I've even been to a wedding.

Folks, that's not what I meant. It was a commentary on the stupid, bias headline, not a commentary on gays. My point was that if CNN thinks "fat, naked guy" is an appropriate headline, they could have put "fat, naked, gay guy" too, and it would have been just as wrong (if not more so).

Yeah, what the hell is up with the 'gay' thing. You make it sound like being Homosexual is bad. Believe it or not, not all Homosexuals evade taxes. I resent that you said that it could be worse if he was called gay, so I suggest you take that back. Richard Hatch aside, in a way I guess it can be bad, because we still have assholes in this country that can't get over the fact that someone is different, so they feel they have to make it harder for that person.

I'm starting to question TV Squad's authors. Yeah, I know it's a blog and you may be entitled to your opinions, but sometimes you have to unbiased and just give facts to avoid insulting your readers. In the past week I've seen authors make fun of Hispanics and a black couple, with no remorse. Shame shame.

"They could have called him that "fat, naked gay guy.""

Yeah, because the worst thing that can happen to you is being called 'gay' in the media.

This country's media wonders why news paper circulation is down, network news is plummeting in the ratings and they publish stories with headlines like this. Amazing

'Fat Naked Guy' has been how Letterman referred to him since the original Survivor was still airing. Some of the stories I saw yesterday even credited Dave for the nickname.

I think it was Hatch that gave himself the title of "Fat Naked Fag." One of the people that voted for him even put "FNF" on his ballot.

I'm guessing CNN.com didn't have the guts to use the word fag.

Or they could have replaced guy with the perhaps more apt: idiot.
