Joking Apart fan releases DVD himself

by Adam Finley, posted May 23rd 2006 2:53PM

joking apartIf you've never heard of the cult TV series Joking Apart, join the club, because I've never heard of it either. Of course, I don't live in the UK. Apparently, however, it was created by Steven Moffat as a precursor to his more popular show Coupling. The BBC comedy, however, was never released on DVD, at least not until a fan named Craig Robins bought the rights to the show himself. Robins also works in television as an editor, so the DVD, which will be available on May 28, is said to have a very "professional" look to it. The series ran from 1995 to 1997 on BBC2, but was eclipsed at the time by more popular fare.

Ahh, I must berate the person who commented earlier. Joking Apart is anything but mediocre. It was one of the most refreshing and original comedies of the early 90s. Unfortunately it suffered from bad scheduling and did not find its audience. A great show and wonderful that it is finally available on DVD, well worth checking out.

I was born and raised in the UK and had never heard of 'Joking Apart' until I read about this, so don't feel too bad about not knowing of it's existence. For every 'The Office' and 'Coupling' there are dozens of mediocre British comedies that deserve to remain obscure; still, kudos to this guy for the effort he put into his project.
