The Five: shows my sister has never watched

by Bob Sassone, posted May 31st 2006 12:34PM
SeinfeldWhen I talk to friends and family, it often amazes me what shows they haven't seen. Now, I know that not everyone can (or should) watch as much television as I do, but I was stunned when I found out what mainstream, popular shows my older sister has never seen. Not even one minute of. And my sister watches a lot of TV. It's not as if she's "anti-TV" or doesn't own a set. She has a lot of shows she watches regularly.

But from talking to her in the past couple of years, here are the shows she says she has never seen.

1. Seinfeld. Can you believe it? How do you avoid a show like Seinfeld? It's not just one of the most popular shows of all-time, it's also a cultural touchstone. It was watercooler talk for many years in the 90s. But she hasn't seen one second of it and has no desire to.

2. The West Wing. This one surprises me, because she's educated and politically active and it seems like the type of show she'd get into. Maybe she'll get into it if I buy her season one on DVD.

3. Lost. Yeah, this is an acquired taste, but even people who don't like this type of show have seen at least an episode or two.

4. Alias. I can see people not watching this, but when you add it to the other shows on the list, it's interesting.

5. South Park. OK, this one I understand totally.

I've never heard of Eve or Half and Half. I prefer a program that utilizes my time well. Quiz shows, game shows, documentaries are more for me. and for comedy content, Desperate Housewives.

Is John's sister related to mine? She doesn't watch almost anything I watch - no "Gilmore girls," no "Prison Break," no "Charmed," no "Lost," no "Alias"...

And yet she watches "Half & Half" and "Eve." I am SO glad they're gone.

Okay, I'll play along. I asked my sister for five shows she's never watched:

dallas
swat
degrassi: the next generation
the big idea w/ donny deutsch
the man show

She had others listed, like "Duck Dodgers", "futurama", "The Tick", but I will make her watch at least one episode of those some day. (I'm thinking of starting her off with the 'Futurama' Xmas episode....)

only those who have NO imagination can pass up on Lost. It's the only show on TV that gets your hearts and minds pounding, yet american idol is #1?? where is this country headed? Is that why we've elected Bush president?

I've never seen Alias, 24, anything on Fox except The Simpsons, anything on the WB, all the new sitcoms from the 2005-6 season....

I did see one Ep of South Park. The singing turd was enough to turn me off of that show.

Seinfield was one of those shows that stayed on my television simply because I couldn't find the remote or I had already left the room.

Like your sister I have never seen a second of Lost or Alias and have no desire to. I only saw one episode each of Seinfeld and South Park and had no desire to see another. The big difference: West Wing, which I watched from pilot through to the end.

My rule of thumb is if more than one person on the show annoys me it does not get a second chance: Desparate Housewives, ER, NYPD Blue, just about all of the "reality" shows (Project Runway sucked me in somehow)....

You will have to do a list of her five guilty pleasure shows just to give the other side.

These "The Five" lists are getting shorter and more inane.

I watch a lot of tv. In fact, i don't know what to do at night when there is nothing on TV. In fact, my husband used to blog for this very site-so we watch a lot of tv. With that being said, I've never seen an episode of Lost (what night is it on? something conflicts; hoping to catch up via NetFlix this summer). I've never watched Alias--again, I think one of my shows conflicts and maybe i've seen a half of episode of South Park and not by my own choice. I think Seinfeld should be the only stunner.

1. Seinfeld - All on DVD
2. WW - It's not politics, it's far left politics.
3. Lost - Love sci-fi, just didn't like it.
4. Alias - one of those shows I'd meant to watch, but kept missing.
5. South park - seend everyone.
