A preview of what Couric might do at CBS News

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 2nd 2006 2:43PM
Katie CouricAt a speech yesterday at the annual convention of CBS affiliates, newly crowned CBS Evening News anchor says that she plans some changes for the show:

"The audience is more sophisticated than we give them credit for - they don't want a mechanical Ted Baxter ...I'm a serious, compassionate, caring person. I hope that comes out. People want a multidimensional [news anchor] and not someone they can put in a box."

She also added (and I'm glad she's finally saying this - I mean, no one else is):

"Anyone who watches Today knows that I've done more hard-hitting interviews than any evening news anchor."

A little self-serving, but so what? It's accurate.

Is she going to be Katherine or Katie?

I hope she will make the anchor desk less stiff and a lot more interesting. Hopefully she will still go out and do interviews herself as well.

I don't think you can say whether or not Katie will be good at evening news until you watch her on the evening news. Personally I was sick of her morning cheesy stuff and only enjoyed her when she was being serious. Katie was a journalist before the Today show and she was the Today Show's National Correspondent before she was ever the co-host with Bryant. She has done evening news shows as well. She has the experience to deal with the real news. The question is will America be able to listen to that real news come out of a women's mouth instead of a man's.

The evening news is a horrible format for "hard hitting" investigative journalism. They only have 20 minutes to give you the what happened today stuff. If they use 5 to 10 of that on one story you have to go look elsewhere for the days NEWS.

Why do you think they created "60 Minutes" in the first place?

Katie is a cute little thing perfect for Morning Infotainment. The primary anchor's job is to deleiver the news each night so he or she is a trusted source when something big happens. She will go down in history as an awful evening news anchor.

I happen to know also that CBS will be giving their news look a makeover, losing the primarily blue schemes they use for Evening and Morning News and UttM and going to a more modern graphical look using red as the primary color.
