Dateline goes off the deep end with Letourneau/Fualaau profile

by Joel Keller, posted Jun 2nd 2006 9:52PM
Mary Kay and Vili FualaauI don't often use the phrase "I just threw up in my mouth a little", mainly because Bill Simmons of ESPN has pretty much rendered it unfunny through overuse. But that's exactly how I felt as I watched Dateline tonight.

In this sickening hour, reporter Josh Mankiewicz interviews Mary Kay Letourneau (now Mary Fualaau) and her husband Villi Fualaau on the first anniversary of their marriage. If you don't remember, Letourneau spent seven years in jail for starting an affair with Fualaau when he was her thirteen-year-old student (she was 34 at the time), and eventually having two kids with him (the second pregnancy sent her back to jail after she was released on probation). After Letourneau left jail, she continued the relationship with her now-legal boyfriend, which culminated in their marriage.

What gave me the über-heebie-jeebies about this profile is how Mankiewicz and his producers approached the story. They decided to make this about a weird but seemingly acceptable love affair rather than making it about a sick woman who just can't let go of her obsession with a man who is in many ways just a kid, even though he can now vote. Mankiewicz asked them questions like "Who gets up earlier?", "Who's the better cook?" and "Who's more romantic?" , making us watch as they gazed into each other's eyes like the nutzoids in those eHarmony commercials.

Never mind that Letourneau, now 44, willingly committed statutory rape on multiple occasions. Never mind that she shattered the lives of the four children that she had with her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Never mind the fact that she brought two children into the world under trying circumstances, leaving them to be raised by their paternal grandmother and teenaged father while she rotted in prison. Look how strong their love is! It was a love that was forbidden!

Oh sure, Mankiewicz asked Letourneau a couple of questions about why she fell for her student's advances; all she would say was that she tried to resist, but he was mature beyond his years. Bullshit. Mankiewicz needed to pursue this further, maybe ask a psychologist about what would kind of emotional problem would lead a grown woman to fall in love with a child. Or maybe he should have spoken to either Letourneau's or Fualaau's parents about what they thought of the continuation of this sick relationship. But no... it was about how much they love each other, how much her 4 other kids (her oldest is only 2 years younger than Fualaau, who's about to turn 23) get along with their stepdad and stepsisters.

And... get this... how Letourneau wants to become a teacher again! Great Lucifer's ghost... when I heard that, I actually burst out laughing. She's a registered sex offender, and a pedophile to boot! Does she realistically think she's going to get a teaching job again on any level? But Mankiewicz reported this as if it could actually happen, that she could still get a job at a private school or college despite her sex offender status. He never asked her the question, "You want to be a teacher again? Are you freakin' serious?", which is what I would have asked her if I was reporting this story.

Ugh. After I watched this Oprah-esque fluff job, I felt like I had to take a shower. But, for some reason, I watched the whole stupid display. I know Dateline has sold its journalistic soul in the past to get exclusive access to figures like Letourneau, but the fact that Mankiewicz didn't pursue even a scintilla of a hard line with her made me want to see Mike Wallace come in and restore some order. After watching this, I'm begging Dateline to go back to its roots of rigging trucks to explode, just so it can get back some of its integrity.

i am in total agreement with Mia and Melissa. she did her time. she should be allowed to teach again. she fell in love with this person. she is not a deviant. the fact that they are married now proves this to me. double standard my ass. if their sexes were reversed it WOULD be different. but...that's just my opinion.

Celine Dion and her husband met when she was early in her teens. He's atleast 20 years older than her. But they got married when she was older. The public seemed to accept that.

I'm a part-Samoan woman & feel sorry for Vili. I know his story well, one of a dominatrix mother, a young life of fundamentalist religion & beatings. A palagi (White) woman giving Vili attention, positive reinforcement, love & kindness aroused him to WANT to please Mary Kay Letourneau so he could get more, MORE of what he was lacking at home & in his culture. I'll bet that Vili was put on-the-rack as a child (physically, sexually, mentally, religiously) growing up in a Samoan family. There isn't one Samoan family I know of that isn't blindly dysfuncitonal, resulting in confused, traumatized children who turn out to be troubled, violent, untrusting cons. Mary Kay, however, is no angel. she is a pedophile who took advantage of a traumatized & unloved child. I speak out this way about Vili's Samoan background because child abuse in our culture is rampant & silenced, the cause for a suicide rate among our youth that tops the class.

Right on, Karen. More stupid, useless TV "news".

I've also been appalled by the entire Mary Kay story since it began--this is a really disturbed woman, who needs help, not enabling--but I guess what strikes me as we look at the fawning journalistic puff piece in this conservative political age is this: hey, at least their marriage is between a man and a woman, right? Isn't that the lesson we're supposed to take away from the news coverage? That as long as it's an opposite-sex union it doesn't matter how perverse (Mary Kay), how sequential (Donald Trump), or how short-lived (Britney's 55 minutes) a marriage is. We're supposed to believe that all of these are unions blessed by God, as opposed to all those blasphemous unions between long-term loving gay couples.

Right?

I think I just threw up a little in MY mouth, too, Joel.

To reiterate what Scott H said in both of his posts, the fact that this was so fawning/nonjudgmental is really the most disgraceful part of this entire ordeal. I mean, the lack of transparency going on at Dateline is beyond abhorrent; I mean, first they dedicate Sweeps to the whole "To Catch a Predator" series (although I disagree with Scott H, I think repeated visits DO have journalistic merit, if for no other reason than the fact that the stings are still successful despite all the media coverage), and two weeks later they are basically PRAISING a woman who went to jail for engaging in the same crime the Predator series attempts to eradicate. The hell? I mean, if you are going to profile this head-case, at least lend a critical eye to the questioning/reporting.

barbara walters interviewed them right before their wedding, so it's not just dateline. it is also bw who everyone thinks is such a respectable journalist, but is really just a joke.

It's interesting that on "TV Squad", nearly everyone has commented on the situation, but very few have commented on the point of the original post -- the fact that Dateline broadcast such a fawning, uncritical piece about these lowlifes. Forget the two people involved here...why don't we hold the television "journalists" to a higher standard? Or is it SO prevalent that everyone just accepts this kind of thing and expects no better?
