Dateline goes off the deep end with Letourneau/Fualaau profile
I don't often use the phrase "I just threw up in my mouth a little", mainly because Bill Simmons of ESPN has pretty much rendered it unfunny through overuse. But that's exactly how I felt as I watched Dateline tonight. In this sickening hour, reporter Josh Mankiewicz interviews Mary Kay Letourneau (now Mary Fualaau) and her husband Villi Fualaau on the first anniversary of their marriage. If you don't remember, Letourneau spent seven years in jail for starting an affair with Fualaau when he was her thirteen-year-old student (she was 34 at the time), and eventually having two kids with him (the second pregnancy sent her back to jail after she was released on probation). After Letourneau left jail, she continued the relationship with her now-legal boyfriend, which culminated in their marriage.
What gave me the über-heebie-jeebies about this profile is how Mankiewicz and his producers approached the story. They decided to make this about a weird but seemingly acceptable love affair rather than making it about a sick woman who just can't let go of her obsession with a man who is in many ways just a kid, even though he can now vote. Mankiewicz asked them questions like "Who gets up earlier?", "Who's the better cook?" and "Who's more romantic?" , making us watch as they gazed into each other's eyes like the nutzoids in those eHarmony commercials.
Never mind that Letourneau, now 44, willingly committed statutory rape on multiple occasions. Never mind that she shattered the lives of the four children that she had with her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Never mind the fact that she brought two children into the world under trying circumstances, leaving them to be raised by their paternal grandmother and teenaged father while she rotted in prison. Look how strong their love is! It was a love that was forbidden!
Oh sure, Mankiewicz asked Letourneau a couple of questions about why she fell for her student's advances; all she would say was that she tried to resist, but he was mature beyond his years. Bullshit. Mankiewicz needed to pursue this further, maybe ask a psychologist about what would kind of emotional problem would lead a grown woman to fall in love with a child. Or maybe he should have spoken to either Letourneau's or Fualaau's parents about what they thought of the continuation of this sick relationship. But no... it was about how much they love each other, how much her 4 other kids (her oldest is only 2 years younger than Fualaau, who's about to turn 23) get along with their stepdad and stepsisters.
And... get this... how Letourneau wants to become a teacher again! Great Lucifer's ghost... when I heard that, I actually burst out laughing. She's a registered sex offender, and a pedophile to boot! Does she realistically think she's going to get a teaching job again on any level? But Mankiewicz reported this as if it could actually happen, that she could still get a job at a private school or college despite her sex offender status. He never asked her the question, "You want to be a teacher again? Are you freakin' serious?", which is what I would have asked her if I was reporting this story.
Ugh. After I watched this Oprah-esque fluff job, I felt like I had to take a shower. But, for some reason, I watched the whole stupid display. I know Dateline has sold its journalistic soul in the past to get exclusive access to figures like Letourneau, but the fact that Mankiewicz didn't pursue even a scintilla of a hard line with her made me want to see Mike Wallace come in and restore some order. After watching this, I'm begging Dateline to go back to its roots of rigging trucks to explode, just so it can get back some of its integrity.
