Last Comic Standing comic really was picked

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 7th 2006 9:49AM
Anthony ClarkWe all know that they do a lot of editing on reality shows. They cut out boring moments, they rearrange the time to make things go by quicker, and they edit carefully to create tension and/or villains we get root against. Last Comic Standing is doing some editing too, and one comic wants you to know about it.

Mark Saldana was actually picked to go to the next round after the first episode, but you didn't see that happen. He says it gave the impression that he wasn't picked, but if you watch the end of the episode he's right on stage with the others. Now he's on ebay, auctioning off the red envelope he got that proves it. So far the bids are up to $100.

Saldana also gives his opinion on which comics you should vote for.

I think the top 10 of this season is absolutely pathetic. There are a few comics who deserve to be there but for the most part, the comics who were selected to be in the top 10 were NOT the funniest or even close to being the funniest. They are just picking people who would be most likely to cause drama or tension in the house. They are using the premise of a "comedy competition" to mask the fact that they just want a reality show. It is pretty pathetic. After last night, I decided taht I am not going to watch this season. I am boycotting the show. They need to give credit to the funny comics and just have a comedy competition. I would absolutely watch that. What they are doing to the show is unfair to the truly funny comics who are trying to get noticed and make a name for themselves in the business.

no...that picture is Anthony Clark. He's the host this year isn't he? He started out as a stand up comic, but not is doing more TV than stand up. He's on "Yes, Dear" on CBS now.

I watch the show to see at least part of some funny acts, as, there haven't been many comedy showcase shows featuring really funny people in a long time.

But, as for whether the show's rigged or not, pfft, there's no way dat phan was funnier than ralphie--heck, he wasn't funnier than dave, the first guy against whom he competed in a head to head competition, and yet...he won. As unknown of a name as he was, you'd think he'd have jumped at the chance to appear on the show like john hefron and alonzo boden did. Maybe the show's producers didn't ask him to appear. Anyway, as you say, dat phan had a better back story than the other comics, and so, he won, but, I have a hard time thinking that the voting public would vote for the story over the comedy. (then again, having seen idol voting results, should I be so surprised?)

The gray area that they are working in, I think, is that there really is no true definition of what makes a comic an "amateur". How well known do you have to be before you're not considered amateur anymore? The networks generally have a way of exploiting gray areas like that.

It's fine if they don't want to make it a show of amateurs, but they should stop promoting it as such.

Last Comic Standing has never really been for true amateurs. Look back at the last two seasons...the "finalists" that made it to TV were all already touring comics who were relatively successful. If anyone listens to Bob and Tom, most of them have already been on that show at some point at least once.
I refuse to watch the show after seeing the results of last season...the whole show is rigged and is a big joke in iteself.

I think they should choose experienced comedians. If they only chose "amateurs" to be on the show then nobody would watch it. It takes years for a comic to develop his/her bits, delivery, etc. The inexperienced comedians typically only have semi-funny one liners that would not be entertaining to watch.

Yeah I was suprised to see Bill Dwyer and Doug Bensen auditioning. They've had lots of exposure on VH1 and other such places...give the real amateurs a chance...
