Rescue Me: Discovery

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jun 7th 2006 1:26AM

Rescue Me; Discovery; Daniel Sunjata; Susan Sarandon(S03E02) This show does not screw around. Everyone, as of right now, needs to get in the habit of recommending Rescue Me the next time they hear someone complain that there's nothing on TV during the summer months. Besides, you can't deny that a show has made it when you have someone like Susan Sarandon making a guest appearance.

All that being said, I think we're seeing a shift in the stories being told. This was the first episode that I can recall that wasn't heavy into the firehouse storylines. Did they even have a fire in this episode? If anything, I think it symbolizes that everyone is moving on and Franco is the prime example after Tommy discovers that he's studying for the Lieutenant's Exam. "Choices" seems to be a prevailing theme right now. But on this show, no one ever makes the right ones.

Jerry was an interesting development. He's officially reached his monetary breaking point and can no longer afford to house his Alzheimer's afflicted wife Jeannie at the extended care home. He even hits up Lou for some cash but we all know that isn't going to happen. He's too busy trying to break into his ex-wife's house to steal back a watch so he can pawn it off. All the man does is drink. I really don't like where Lou is headed.

At one point, the whole crew ends up at a fairly classy bar and that's where Susan Sarandon comes into play. I don't think we caught her name but she's very interested in Franco. For those who caught the preview for next week's episode, the phrase "boy-toy" was tossed around so I think we might know where this is headed. On the other side of the spectrum was Mike. He bumped into one of his buddies from the academy and he urged Mike to transfer to a different house once the "probie" status expired. Mike's friend was convinced it was the only way he was going to gain respect but Mike seemed hesitant. I hope he hangs around. Tommy brought a girl home too. And duct-tape was involved but that's all I'll say about that.

Then came the fireworks. The next evening at Tommy's Dad's birthday, everything went to hell. First Tommy saw Garrity picking the cherries out of Maggie's drinks. Now unless he was spending extra-curricular time with her, why would Sean know to do that? End result? Tommy knows the two of them are involved.

Later, Tommy drops a napkin and sees something under the table that he shouldn't have seen. Janet and Johnny were holding hands and playing footsie. End result? Tommy hops the table, pounds the hell out of Johnny, drags him outside, throws him into a car window, and leaves his brother bleeding in the middle of the street. It even seemed like he hurt Janet pretty bad when he pushed her aside. Now, while I don't condone what Tommy did, I still feel bad for the guy. It's his wife (they're not divorced... yet) and his brother. That's rough.

Other things I found amusing about this episode:

  • The notion that "Chink Food" and birthday cake could have prevented WWII.
  • Garrity's Mom's rack... it's quite magnificent apparently.
  • Colleen becoming a Born-Again Christian because it's all the rage at school.
  • Tommy's "incredibly gay, Brokeback travel mug."

That's one thing you can say about this show. It's topical. And offensive. And unbelievably, painfully real.

This show is awfull and perpetuates racism, sexism and violence. Susan Sarandon has lost her mind to support a show like this! Rape and racial slurs all over the place will never bring about peace and global understanding.
I hope no man goes home thinking "I'll just rape my ex-wife and then she'll love me!"
FX should cancel the show.

Great story lines and music. The ending of the first
episode was a master piece, Tommy saving that child.
I can't wait for tuesday night, its the best night of t.v. in a long time. Thanks Denis, for a great show.

Evidence of idiots on this blog:

> Am I the only one who finds Susan Sarandon sexy?

> Sorry but this show is AWFUL this season...what happened? Script is beyond bad....who's at the helm?I've given it two weeks...and I'll never watch again

I still think Katie is developing an eating disorder. The oldest has become "Born Again" and between the parents splitting up, fighting, having a whore for a mother and her brother being killed, she is "coping" with food.I guess we'll see next week.

I really think the "gay, its not who you think" rumored storyline might just be Loe. I thought there was a weird vibe between him and his Doc/Vet. I see Lou crashing soon.

Great Episode even without a fire, or Tommy seeing a ghost. I also think his youngest was just sick, not an eating disorder. I think you are looking a little to hard for things. You heard what she ate, Chilli fries, pizza, ice creme. Btw the duct-tape took to long to develop but paid off well.

Remembering last season, I think the series had become relentlessly grim. Tommy Gavin was the FDNY's counterpart to Andy Sipowicz of the NYPD - a modern day Job.

The bleep is still piling up on Tommy, but I think the writers have finally found the right balance between the drama and the humor.

Best example from last night - I found myself laughing out loud during Charles Durning's b'day speech and then tense with anticipation as Tommy got more coiled over his discovery about Johnny and Janet; and then gasping with shock to see Tommy thrust his brother's hed through the car window.

Earlier in the day, before seeing the episode, I had been thinking of a scene from the 'Columbo' 25th anniversary episode in which he noticed that the forensics investigator helped the suspect into the back seat because she got easily car-sick - a fact that the CSI guy should not have known, having never met her before supposedly.

And that same type of set-up came into play in 'Rescue Me' when Tommy saw Sean take the cherry out of Mae's Manhattan. I'm sure if his attention wasn't immediately diverted by seeing his wife and his brother holding hands under the table, Tommy would have been leaping over the table to pounce on Sean instead. Can't wait to see where that leads.

And I have great fears for "Lou". The only reason I don't think the worst of his storyline is because of Scurti's blog-work over in the TV Guide blogs - I don't get the sense from the way he writes that his role may have a planned finality.

all in all, a great show!

Did anyone catch Franco saying that he was out with Mike, who showed no interest in some hot chick? I think I read a rumor that one of the guys was going to turn out to be gay (bi?) this season, and I think it's pretty obvious which one it's going to be.
