Things I Hate About TV: "I'm gonna be a jerk, Bob"

by Annie Wu, posted Jun 12th 2006 12:22PM
Hate me!I've watched The Price Is Right for a really long time. Really, really long. Well, long enough to know that, while the Beauties will get old and start to sag in all the wrong places, Bob Barker will never, ever age. And there has something -- someone, rather -- that has bothered me since I started watching.

See, Contestants' Row is a lot of fun 'cause we get to see people excitedly flail their arms when they hear the classic "C'mon down!" Everyone's happy, from the frat boy to the great-grandmother with "I Heart Bob" Bedazzled on her shirt. But, there is almost always one jerk that has to ruins everyone's time.

Bob: Alrighty, Contestant One. What's your bid?
One: Gonna have to say... [does silent consultation with parent/spouse in the audience] $700!
Bob: Contestant Two?
Two: Seven... Oh... ONE. [cackles evilly and watches as the $700-person crumbles into nothingness]

And, it seems like more often than not, the "one dollar more" jerk wins. Couldn't they at least have the balls to up their bid maybe twenty dollars? An item is never something-hundred and ONE dollars, so why bother looking like a complete, well, douchebag by literally one-upping someone? I'm one of those people that likes yelling at the TV when no one else is home, so I'm prone to curse out any Contestants' Row jerk that undeservingly wins an awesome prize (like... a brand new car) or gets to play the best game ever, Plinko. Hell, I literally rain down fire when a Jerk gets to the Showcase Showdown. My bottom-line is this: If you ever go on The Price Is Right, don't be a Contestants' Row jerk, or I'll yell at the screen and pretend like I'm really doing a number on your feelings.

Yeah. This has bothered me since I was a little kid. 'Bout time I got it off my chest.

The one dollar over strategy is sneaky but it's a good one. If someone stays on contestant's row long enough, they get to try it.

EXCUSE ME,TOM, IT WAS "TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES" & THEN "THE PRICE IS RIGHT." ON THIS SUBJECT, THE ONLY REASON I WEIGHED IN WAS THE MISINFORMATION ON "LET'S MAKE A DEAL," I CANNOT BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE LOVING THIS SHOW AT ALL! IT'S LIKE FISHING TO ME-A HUGE BORE!

The "one dollar more or less" is all part of the game, so it doesn't bother me. It's part of the strategy to win, and should motivate people into guessing without lowballing themselves. What I *do hate* however, is the constant, long, drawn out and very boring wait that everyone on contestant row, Bob himself, and the tv viewer has to endure because dork there has to consult the entire audience, and/or try to hear his buds back up give him a dollar figure to bid with. Come on...if you can't even handle guessing on your own you deserve to be one-up'd.

I want to thank everyone for their hilarious comments. I posted previously about how my mom laughs at the show, but as I read these comments to her, she laughs so hard she cries. Thank you again, and keep 'em comin'!!

The most irritating contestants are the ones that can't think for themselves and turn to the audience and look stupid pleading for advice on what to bid. It slows the game and irritates Bob.

When my little sister was on Price is Right, the jerk next to her bid $1 more than her - and she smacked him. It was awesome. Even Bob Barker laughed. I hate these $1 more people.

(Jerkoff got on by the way, and my sister, who would have if not for said jerkoff, got his and her diamond watches instead.)

Whoever thinks Bob is rude for not hugging, must be very young and not up on the news. Audience members are asked, before the show, not to hug or even get too close to Bob. He is an OLD Man and very fragile. Can't you tell by looking at him that a good strong wind would blow him away? In fact, he has been knocked down by stupid, 'it's all about ME' people.

The stupidist bid I hear is when someone before them bids, say $500 and they then bid $499. There is no leadway at all.

Yep, the $1 upper has always pissed me off also, and makes the game unfair to the first bidder. I yell GREAT with the 3rd bidder $1 ups the asshole second bidder.

I have tried to figure out ways to overcome that unfairness by the show's producers, for example, requiring that any bid be at least $10 higher than a previous bid. But, what happens then if previous contestants have bid $700 and another bid $710?

Alas, it appears there is no fix.
