Things I Hate About TV: Not saying goodbye on the phone

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 13th 2006 7:00PM
Old telephoneHave you ever noticed that many TV characters don't say goodbye when they're done with a phone call? I find that this happens the most on action/adventure shows, where the evil boss or hero just doesn't have time to say goodbye, he just says something to the person on the other end and hangs up, and on soaps, where you'll see it happen almost every episode. I think writers and directors think it adds more drama to a scene. Personally I think it would be funny if the person the character was talking to would call back a minute later and say, "did you hang up or something?"

I'll often be watching a show and a character will just hang up the phone without saying goodbye and I'll make the joke in my head, "um, goodbye?"

This blogger agrees, and uses 24 as an example.

Not only don't they say "goodbye" but they often say "yeah" when they first pick up the phone.

Also, one thing that also drives me crazy is when a character invites another character to have a drink, or a cup of coffee, and the other person never, ever drinks the coffee/drink and usually ends up putting down the cup and leaving the scene. At least take a sip or two before you go, please.

I have to agree. It bugs me to no end. Alot of movies and television shows rely on our 'suspension of disbelief' by grounding their shows close to reality. Its little things like not ending a conversation with goodbye that just pulls me out of that state.

I, also, get really really bugged by the making a date without a set time thing. So when Logan tells Veronica that he'll pick herup tonight to go out to eat.. does she just get ready at 5 and wait by the door? How does she know he's not coming until 8 or 9? It just bugs me. It bugs me more than the 'no goodbye' stuff. Someone make them stop doing it!

My pet annoyance is how all the crime drama shows are able to take any photograph, zoom in and get clearer images than the original photo.

Oh, man, the no-saying-goodbye-on-the-phone thing has bugged me since FOREVER. Who the hell does that? Who just hangs up without giving any indication at all that the conversation is over?

Damn, it makes me as crazy as people driving who have long conversations with the shotgun passenger that involve their taking their eyes off the road for, like, forever.

Goodbye.

And how about whne they end phone calls with "lets meet first thing tomorrow morning at the park!" First thing at the park? What time is that and where at the park?

even more annoying:
people tend to leave their parked cars unlocked, sometimes even with windows down...

Why do you want to waste time with such a pedantic action. Heck, even 1 second more of a car chase is better than listing to "Goodbye" five times a night. 35 times a week. 1820 times a year or 1820 seconds of my life.

It happens in conversation as well, with people just turning their back and walking away. 24, again, is guilty, but I was seeing it as something I need to learn to do to seem hard rather than something fake. So far I haven't been able to pull it off.

Not only that...characters will say stuff like: "Lets go out for dinner tomorrow" and then hang up...without ever saying where or when.
I guess at lot of ESP is employed in TV Land.
