CBS says complaints not from viewers

by Chris Thilk, posted Jun 14th 2006 1:25PM
without a traceResponding to a fine of $3.3 million from the Federal Communications Commission, CBS has said that none of the complaints regarding a recent episode of Without A Trace came from actual viewers. The network says that all of the 4,200-plus complaints labeling the episode as "indecent" came from the Parents Television Council and American Family Association, two socially conservative advocacy groups. CBS claims in its appeal that to be valid a complaint must come from an actual viewer of th show. Ironically, the broadcast of the episode that drew the complaints was a repeat. When the episode was originally aired no complaints were filed. The appeal from CBS seeks to rescind the fine, the largest ever doled out by the FCC over an indecency issue. A PTC spokesperson says that this is just legal manuvering and that the will of the people must be recognized. That might be true but the complaints are hardly valid if they didn't watch the show, are they? And where were the complaints the first time around?

hahhahhahahhahhahahaaaaaaa~ oh snap! so PTC proved that if one doesn't want to watch a TV show, one just doesn't watch it. one doesn't go complain about a TV episode "repeat".

I'm not sure if these groups were the ones who lobbied for the V-chip but the PTC has been vehement in their opposition to the V-chip. I'm not entirely sure of their reasoning but I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that the networks decide how a show will be rated and not some outside body; presumably one which has something closer to their views on what people - not just children - will be allowed to see. Or perhaps they just fear free will; the sort of free will which lets people decide that their 13 year old is mature enough to watch a show rated TVM despite the PTC saying that he's too young. (It's not much of a surprise of course to find that Brent Bozell who heads the PTC is also the spokesman for a major conservative political organization.)

I've written to this Parents Television Council several times. I've asked intelligent, well thought out questions about why they determine shows as vulgar, etc., and send their people after them. They are notorious for their campaign against Nip/Tuck, a cable program, rated nc-17 or somethiing and on late at night. I've asked why they do not promote the v-chip or the myriads of other software and devices already available with not additional charge so that children don't watch such programs. I've pointed out that there is more programming on television for children now than at any other time in history, but they still complain about the programming that isn't for children. I've asked at what point they decided that television should be for children only, and why they think that if I pay for cable, I should have my viewing censored. I could go on and on (yes, even more than I have already).

After all that, and many emails, the response I received was absolutely nothing. Zero. Zilch. So, reverting back to my childhood - they suck. They don't deserve to be listened to intelligently if they will not converse with the public in the same manner. Screw them. And, if you're so inclined, please bombard them with intelligent questioning of their motives and beliefs. Maybe someone will actually gain some understanding of what they purport to stand for.

What about all of the millions of people that aren't offended? Why do we have to keep holding ourselves back because a small amount of the population does not like something on TV. You know what the subject matter is, don't watch it. You aren't being forced, so don't force what you think on everyone else. Tired of these groups.

"Supposedly" there are scenes of simulated sexuality, although no one is naked and you don't actually see anything more offensive than some teens in silhouette writhing about suggestively with each other. The interesting thing about the fine is that the show airs in the third hour of prime time so only those stations in the Central and Mountain time zones were liable to be fined because there the third hour airs between 9 and 10 local time while in the Eastern and Pacific time zones it's between 10 and 11 when such things are supposedly safe from childish eyes.

they did the same thign to CBS when Stern was on the radio and got away with it. And I believe most of the complaints regarding the SuperBowl/Janet Jackson thing.

This is typical religious conservatism as its worst. They want to dictate all of America's values, when evidently nobody shared thier point of view the first time the episode aired. I wish people would just learn to be responsible for themselves and not ask the government to do it for them.

If I send 4200 emails to the FCC saying I find the PTC to be indecent, will they get fined, too?
