Scott Patterson knows what to do with his Gilmore Girls money

by Joel Keller, posted Jun 16th 2006 12:33PM
Scott PattersonAnyone remember when Scott Patterson -- currently playing Luke Danes on Gilmore Girls -- played Elaine's "spongeworthy" boyfriend on Seinfeld? Well, that was probably Patterson's first big role, but it didn't exactly start the money rolling in. In fact, according to this New York Daily News article, Patterson's earnings in the two years before he got the Gilmore part were $23,000 and $33,000 (yikes -- he made that little money despite his high profile roles? Shows you how hard it is out there if you don't have a regular series).

But seven years on a hit show has Patterson in the money. But he didn't always spend it well. The article details some of the mistakes Patterson made at first -- he lost a bundle on eToys stock, for instance -- before seeking the help of former actor and current financial planner Jeffery Fishman. Now, he's actively involved in planning for his future, whether the acting jobs continue or not.

By the way, Patterson is 47. Wow. Didn't realize he was that old (I figured he was closer to 40). At least we know the guy takes care of himself.

Suddenly I feel just a little bit better about all that money *I* lost on eToys stock. Now if I could just get a spot on a TV show to make up for it (preferably opposite Lauren Graham).

Thanks for the article. wish it was more in depth. But someone had it right when they said we don't get to hear from the supporting cast very often. Didn't realize he was pushing 50. Thanks again. Look forward to more.

Thanks, Joel. I've been a Gilmore fan for years and it is always nice to read about the actors, especially one of my favorites. I appreciate the fact that it is not the usual celebrity bit. Scott's wise to be directly involved in his finances and he probably appreciates his success even more because of the struggle. Congrats to Scott for his reversal of fortune in a relatively short period of time!

Thanks for bringing the article to our attention, Joel. I've been a Gilmore fan for many years, and there aren't many opportunities to read about the supporting cast. It's impressive that Scott takes the time to educate himself on his investments, rather than blindly following his adviser and hoping that everything turns out OK. I would guess in Hollywood that he is more the exception, than the rule.

I'm more yikes-ing at the fact that he made that little money despite his high-profile guest spots.

I sympathize with you, Chris. More than you realize. :)

I take a little offense at the yikes remark; my salary is in that range :(
